CARRIERS’ CHARGE^
to thk Eorron or tit* tbess. Sir,—l am seeking information about carriers’ charges in the city. When engaging a carrier I was informed that they were not permitted to "go off the stand" under 2a 6d. My parcel of stuff was taken a few chains for that price. On the same day purchases made at another market in the city were taken to the railway for Is. In my experience in business during the last war both cartage and taxi charges were all prices imaginable. I should be interested to know if there is really the minimum fixed charge of 2s 6d. —Yours, etc.. A CAREFUL BUYER. December 3, 1940. [Commenting on this letter, the secretary of the Christchurch and Suburban Carriers’ and Customhouse Agents’ Association (Inc.) said: “The minimum charge under the carriers’ schedule is 2s. It is not possible to make any statement regarding the charge of 2s 6d mentioned, as all the circumstances, such as in receiving or effecting delivery, etc., are not Pjrnown. It would seem, however, that the charge of Is was not an undercharge. All rates of cartage arc now approved by the Transport Department and any alterations have to be approved by this department.]
