RACING AND TROTTING
HORORATA RAGES 1 TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS The interest of Canterbury racegoers will be centred in the annual race meeting of the Hororata Racing Club to be held on the Hororata racecourse to-morrow. The fields will all be well filled, and some good class horses will be seen in action. The track benefited by recent rain, but the going is certain to be fast. The single pool system will be in use, and the following horses are likely to be well supported:— Bangor High-weight: Dranoel, Princess Minerva. Trial Plate: Circular Note, Farida, Doric Mist. Glendore Trot: Aurie’s Star, Crackajack, Diamond Cluster. Hororota Hack Handicap; Iceland Spar, Ferriby, Shanghai Lily. H. A. Knight Memorial: Symbol, Skyrena, Cymric. Novice Stakes: Lockheed, Greenbank, Nightshift. Snowdon Trot: Burt Scott, Warwick, Aurie’s Star. Sandown Hack Handicap; Raceaway, Synthetic, Papernilla.
1 TURF GOSSIP Track Work at Riccarton The weather was favourable for track work before the breakfast interval at : Riccarton yesterday, but a strong , north-west wind made matters very unpleasant later in the morning. Main ' interest was centred in horses to race ! at Hororata to-morrow, and these all i galloped on the plough, which, because ; of the jrass tracks becoming very hard, . is now in general use. The plough was ' open for reverse work for the first 1 half hour, between 5 and 5.30, but the only horse to work on it was Don’t ■ Forget, who completed an easy circuit, sprinting home the last three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. Before Breakfast Winning Rival and Wild Fox covered six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, and their stable-mate Wild Talk ran seven furlongs in Imin 30sec. Sovereign Lady and Muffler executed a strong gallop over nine furlongs in Imin 59 l-sscc, keeping together throughout. Impressive Task Iceland Spar, joined by Nightshift at five furlongs, ran seven furlongs in Imin 29 3-ssec, the last six in Imin 16 1 l-ssec, and the last three in 37 4-ssec. Puella and Rue went over the same i ground in Imin 31 2-ssec, the first four in 51 4-ssec. Ageratum beat Glenora Boy over six furlongs in Imin 15 l-ssec, the last three in 37 4-ssec. Others over this 1 journey included Sweet Mystery Imin 17sec, Aggravate and Lockheed imin 17 3-ssec, and Not Out Imin 18sec. The best work over five furlongs was credited to St. Cloud and Skyrena, who were abreast throughout in Imin 1 2-5 sec, the last three in 37sec. Others included Gold Nugget in Imin 4 2-ssec, Master Flash and Lord Midas in Imin 4 2-ssec, Kilrobe in Imin 5 l-ssec, and Circular Note and Make Play in Imin 6sec. Ferriby broke *away in front of Royal Chief commencing a mile gallop, and finished a neck to the good in Imin 46sec, the first half in 54 4-ssec. Smart Sprints There were several useful half-mile sprints, Shanghai Lily and Greenbank took 50sec. Farida and Wincheslea 50 4-ssec, Palfrey and Doria 51 4-ssec, Waitaka, Lady Magellan and Philibun 51sec, Wardress 52sec, and Great Bramble and Lady Derby 54sec. After the Interval Dranoel impressed by beating Symbol over five furlongs in Imin 2 3-ssec, the last three in 37 l-ssec. Gay Parade and Gold Don covered the same distance in Imin 4 2-ssec, and Papernilla easily accounted for Dispense in Imin 4 3-ssec. Sham Raid took Imin 4 2-ssed, Scarteen Imin 6sec and Sham Boy Imin 7sec. Miss Tasta galloped six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, and Cymric, under a strong hold, took Imin 19 3-ssec. Schoolgirl, who has been showing the effects of galloping on hard ground, traversed a mile in Imin 46 3-ssec, Monopoly accompanying her over the ■ last half in 52 3-ssec. Withdrawn Statuette and Waikari Chief have been withdrawn from their engagements at the Hororata meeting tomorrow. Ned Worthy Ned Worthy has been nominated for the Auckland Cup, 4min 31sec class, and to be in this race he will be giving away 12 yards. At New Brighton last Saturday he'was handicapped on 4min 32sec, and while he put up a brave fight and led for the greater part of the journey he failed over the concluding stages. Ned Worthy, is rather badly placed for the Christmas and New Year racing and he has just failed to qualify for several well endowed events. -The Ashburton Cup is •for horses that can do 4min 29sec or better; at the Canterbury Park meeting the Canterbury Handicap, of £IOOO, is 4min 28sec class, and the Mason Stakes
Handicap, of £7OO, is for 4min 29sec class horses. A .win at New Brighton on Saturday would have left Ned Worthy nicely placed. Bill B. Bill B. showed at New. Brighton on Saturday the form he displayed at one period last season and he is already spoken of as a possible winner of the ’Auckland Cup. From a 4min 30sec mark he was beaten in the Achilles Handicap at New Brighton, but in the Hurricane Handicap he finished with rare dash to run a mile and a quarter in 2min 40 3-ssec. His trainer, J. Bryce, won the Auckland Cup in 1915 with Cathedral Chimes, in 1920 with Man o’ War, and in 1927 with Ahuriri. If Bill B. is taken to Auckland he will almost certainly be driven by his trainer, who has hopes of adding to his already fine record. Auckland T.C. Entries totalling 553 have been received for the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting on December 27, 28 and 31. a feature being the large number of outside horses nominated. The Jubilee Trotting Cup has attracted 16, including seven from the South Island, and of a total of 16 in the Rowe Memorial Handicap five are outside the province. The Champion Handicap, principal race of the middle day, has drawn 25, and the President’s Handicap, chief event on the concluding day, has 18. With 37 in the December Handicap, limit 3min ssec, the race will be divided, and the prize money increased to £4OO, with £2OO to each division. The second division will be run on the second day. The Dominiofa Handicap, limit 3min Isec, on the middle day, and Onslow Handicap, limit 3min 38sec, on the last day, have also drawn 37. Following are the entries for the two principal races the first day:—Jubilee Trotting Cup, of £I4OO and gold cup value £100; two miles; limit 4min 31sec—Ringtrue, Kenwortby, Ned Worthy, Mongolian, Our

Meetings of fruitgrowers are being called throughout the Nelson district to consider a proposal made by the Government in respect to prices for the purchase of apples and pears in the approaching season. It is understood that the overall price offered is slightly higher than last year, but not as high as growers had hoped in view of increased production costs. Further representations will probably result from the meetings.
