WAIREWA COUNTY COUNCIL GRANT OF £SO FOR COUNTRY QUEEN The Wairewa County Council decided at its last meeting to grant £SO to the Country Queen’s fund. The council previously made a grant of £IOO to the Patriotic Funds. Cr. W. H. Montgomery submitted the finance report and accounts amounting to £1215 2s 4d, which were passed for payment. The repeat stated that the chairman had interviewed Mr T. G, Beck, District Engineer, regarding the Highways Board taking over the main highway* through the county, and the matter was to be further investigated. It was decided to ask the Railways Department to'clear blackberry and other noxious weds on its property at Caton’s Bay. Messrs J. V. Chapman and H. L. Lewthwaite, representing the Little River Cemetery Board, waited on the council suggesting the council should take over the board’s functions, as this seemed to be the policy adopted in other parts of , the Dominion. They stated the cemetery board had a credit of £4O. The council decided to inspect the cemetery and make a decision at its next meeting. Cr. Keenan moved that plans and 1 specifications for the bridge in Okuti Valley, leading to Messrs Lewthwaite’s and Bank’s property, for which a Government grant was available, be prepared, and considered at the next meeting. The council agreed that the bridge should be built during the next financial >ear. The IvUti/i Highways Board notified that extra allocations had been made for secondary highways in the county, £lO5 being granted for the LytteltonMotukarara highway, and £llO for the Port Levy-Little River highway. RANGIORA NOTES REPORT ON DEPUTATION TO MINISTER A report of a conference in Wellington this week between the Minister for Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) and a deputation representing Canterbury fruitgrowers, on the marketing scheme for apples and pears, was given by Mr N. Goldsbury at a meeting, on Wednesday evening of tHe Loburn Fruitgrowers’ Association. The deputation consisted of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and Messrs C. H. Clibborn (acting-secretary to the Canterbury Progress League), N. Goldsbury, H. R. Sampson, and B. T. Turner (fruitgrowers), Mr Goldsbury stated that the deputation had received a very sympathetic hearing from the Minister. The association decided to ask the Minister to appoint a Canterbury representative on the New Zealand Advisory Fruit Board. Nursery School Committee The final meeting of the year of the Rangiora Nursery Schobl Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Mrs A. Buckingham, who presided, said that it was hoped that the co-operation and help of parents would be received in the coming year, so that the activities of the school might be extended. The Rangiora High School Board decided recently, after representations by the committee, to take control of the nursery school, and as a development the nome science course at the High School has been revised on a home-centred basis. Organ Recital An organ recital was given by Mr G. Gibbs Jordan in St. John’s Anglican Church, Rangiora, on Wednesday evening. The programme, which included a number of items by the choir, was; Organ solos by Mr Jordan, "Grand Chorus” (Salome), "A Twilight Reverie” (Dupont), “Minuet” (Handel), "Salut d’Amour” (Elgar), Introduction and Fugue (Dr. Harris), “O Salutaris" (Elgar), Prelude (Bach); hymn by choir, "Jerusalem” (Parry); .anthems, “Call to Remembrance” (Novello) and “The Lord is Gracious” (Dr. Harris); unison song. “England” (Parry). Examination Passes Of the 16 candidates from the Rangiara High School who sat the Government shorthand-typing examinations an November 16, 14 gained passes.
