The Press SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1940. Farewell to Lord Galway
During his period of office as GovernorGeneral of New Zealand, Lord Galway has seen the threat of European war draw nearer and break upon the Empire at last in a storm which is testing its strength and faith as never before. His last year has been spent amid strenuous military and economic preparations to meet the utmost strain that can be put upon the resources of this Dominion. It will be every citizen’s regret that Lord Galway, Lady Galway, and their family could not have known New Zealand in times more serene. But as they are farewelled it cannot be this feeling that is uppermost. His Excellency has given the country signal service and a signal example. Of his conduct of relations with His Majesty’s Government in New Zealand, as the King’s personal representative, there is no need to speak. But upon innumerable occasions he has addressed directly to the people, with the force of complete simplicity, those messages of steadfast and exalted patriotism which, as events have proved, were as timely as they were true. And as events have brought their demands. Lord Galway has led the people in their response and encouraged them by his own. New Zealand will not forget, to use one conspicuous example only, Lord Galway’s tireless and inspiring work for the National Patriotic Fund, or Lady Galway’s devoted help. They are farewelled with deep gratitude, then, and with the warmth of sympathy that the sharing of momentous and critical experience must always arouse.
