INDIA TO-DAY
TO THE EDITOB 0? THE PBE9B. Sir,—Your correspondent, Major R. F. W. Ashworth, is to be congratulated. Gad sir, how I admire . his complete and sympathetic understanding of the Indian situation, and his sturdy and imperialistic outlook! It is this type of mentality, which drives straight over any opposition, that has put India just where It is to-day. But I cannot agree that the mob has got as much intelligence as the Major suggests when he says. “One had thought that the Indian question was pretty well understood to-day.” I’m afraid there are still a lot of people with auite the wrong ideas about India. Why, just recently I came across a fellow who actually'thought this person, Gandhi, was one of the most important men of the age. Stuff and nonsense! As the
Major so aptly remarks, Gandhi and the rest of the Congress fellows would probably get their throats cut if the British Army withdrew. Another Amritsar massacre, only perhaps worse. We simply can't give these Indians the right to decide for themselves if they want to run a risk like that. The country may belong to them, but in the sacred name of democracy it is our duty to make up their minds for them: and if their ridiculous Legislative Assembly twice refuses to vote for more taxes, then thank God there's always the Viceroy to take the matter out of their hands.—Yours, etc., • (Colonel) D, S. O. BLIMP. November 27, 1940.
