WASTE

TO THE EDITOR OE THS PRESS. Sir, —The Government howls for more production, so let us inquire what is done with the commodities when they are produced. Thir y-eight thousand cases of apples, which people sadly need, have been produced and allowed to rot. Hundreds—many hundreds —of tons of potatoes have been produced (near Christchurch) and allowed to rot. Tens of thousands of cabbages and carrots have been produced (again near Christchurch) and have been ploughed in. Fish —quantities of fish—have been thrown Lack into the sea. Huge quantities of lemons have been destroyed—and the sad tale of the frustration of human effort goes on and on. In war time all efforts of the people are. in effect, war efforts, and this foolish destruction of foodstuffs literally means that to that extent the Government is sabotaging the people’s war effort. The question is: how long are the people going to stand for it?— Yours, etc., _ NATIONAL CREDIT. November 28, 1940.
