GOVERNMENT ISSUES DEARER The Christchurch Exchange was open on four days only this week. Except for one or two sections, markets generally continued dull and sales have been restricted. Industrials were well supported and price levels on the whole have been well maintained with definite upward moves in some longer dated Government issues, and insurance and frozen meat shares. War Loan 1953 was firmer with dealings at £79 17s 6d and £BO, and further buyers at the higher figlirc. The 4 per cent, stock due 1943 was firm at £lOl Bs; the 1949 stock advanced 5s to £lO3 10s, and the 1949-52 5s to £lO4 10s. There was moderate activity in municipal and local body debentures. Bank shares were not so well supported—the chief movements were a drop of 4s 3d in National of New Zealand to 36s—closing business was at 375; and a rise of 3d in New Zealand to 40s 3d. Other stocks were firm at late rates. , In the insurance group National moved up to 18s and South British to 49s 6d, while New Zealand rose sharply to 62s 3d—a lift of 9d. Shipping shares had moderate in-quiry-union (pref.) advanced to 275. Frozen meat shares had steady demand. Canterbury at . £ll scored a rise of 10s since September 19. New Zealand Refrgerating were firm at 20s 2d and 20s 3d. , In the woollens section Bonds Hosiery were firm at 29s 6d, and Felt and Textiles moved up to 38s 6d. Gas shares were easier;-Auckland Id down at 7s 7d and Christchurch 3d down at 23s 6d. Westport Coal advanced to 22s 9d. After the announcement of the interim dividend, the prices of New Zealand Breweries dropped frpra 32s 9d to 32s—later recovering to 32s 6d. Dominion were firmer at 30s, Balllns (15s pd.) in their first business since October 17 were 3d easier at 11s. In the miscellaneous section the most noticeable feature was the decline in, some chain, stores, Woolworths easing fid, to 17s 7d,-and closing weaker, and Woolworths (New Zealand) to 15s, while G. J. Coles on small business held at 695, Brokcn-Hill Proprietary after easing to 45s recovered to 45s 6d. British Tobacco were 6d easier at 495. * Dominion Fertiliser were fractionally weaker at 27s 6d. Donaghy’s Rope were firm at 64s 3d. Electrolytic Zmc on small business were firm at 54s 3d for the ordinary and the preference in their first transaction since October 29 lost Is 6d to 55s 6d. Macdufls (pref.) were firm at 19s—the ordinary shares •moved up to Hs 2d. McKenzies, after touching 45s 9d, relapsed to 455. New Zealand Drugs advanced Is 6d to 775. New Zealand Farmers’ Fertiliser and New Zealand Newspapers were; firm at 22s and 32s respectively. New Zealand Paper Mills were steady at 29s 6d. Southland Ice Cream, in their first business this year, changed' hands at 23s 6d. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. 44 per cent stock due July 13, 1949, was firmer at £B4—the stock due 27/7/51 changed hands at the same price. Wilsons Cement were fractionally weaker at 18s lOd. Big River rose sharply to Is. Martha held around 7s 2d. Waihi Investment were fractionally weaker at 4s 4d, Mount Lyells (ex div.) were firmer at 29s 9d, and. Mount Morgans rose 6d to 11s. YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS There was a good volume of business on the Christchurch Stocky Exchange yesterday, with the bulk of the dealings in industrials. Price levels generally were well maintained. DIVIDEND FROM DALGETY LONDON. November 28. Dalgety and Company has announced a limited 4 per cent, interim dividend on ordinary shares for the year ended June 30. GRAIN AND PRODUCE ALL MARKETS QUIET The grain and produce markets this week have been exceptionally quiet with practically no business passing m any line. Quotations remain unchanged except that April-May-June potatoes are reported to be talked of at up to £5 5s an increase of 5s on business reported last week.
