Fraser) from six Rangiora district men serving in Egypt,, The letters stated that the parcels arrived safely and the gifts were most welcome. The correspondents were Sergeant J. W. Harley, Drivers R. F. Whitham and A. CobdenCox Sapper'D. V. Sisson, and Privates R. W. le Vaillant and D. A. Muir. To-day’s Sports Postponed last week because of unfavourable weather, senior grade cricket matches'which were started in the North Canterbury district a fortnight ago, will be continued to-day. Woodend is in a good position in the match against Kaiapoi at Woodend. At Dudley Park, Rangiora. ‘Rangiora A will finish its game with Rangiora B. In the junior competition, to-day’s matches axe between Eyreton and Kaiapoi, Amberley and Carleton, and Loburn and Fernside. Play in the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis SubAssociation’s competitions was cancelled last Saturday, and the senior grade matches this afternoon will be between Amberlev Domain and Balcairn. and West Eyreton and Seftqn. The Rangiora Defence Rifle Club will hold its third shoot of the season. Two Elmwood fours will play pennant bowls games at the Rangiora green, while two Rangiora fours will visit Elmwood. SOLDIERS’, PARCELS COLLECTIVE SCHEME OPPOSED AT AKAROA The Akaroa Borough Council at its last meeting supported a proposal made by the Rangiora Patriotic Committee that district patriotic committees should be allowed to collect for and forward parcels to their own district soldiers. The Rangiora Committee stated that it had sent parcels to its own soldiers at fortnightly intervals, but was now informed that a fresh regulation prevented committees from raising funds for this purpose. It was suggested the Minister and chairman of the National Patriotic Board should be written to protesting against the regulation. The letter stated that the free parcels for soldiers had been made up by people in the larger centres, who had not collected the actual money. This resulted in a slump of interest in raising funds for parcels, and cut out the initiative of thousands of willing helpers in the country districts. Letters from Egypt showed that one free parcel in nine months had been issued to the troops and that not every soldier got a parcel. Furthermore, some parcels contained such things as bully beef and pork and beans. The Mayor. Mr F. Davis, said he now favoured local collection and personally addressed parcels from each district. He moved a letter be written to the Minister asking that a clause be inserted in the regulations allowing local committees to raise funds for soldiers’ parcels, farewell and welcome home functions. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr and Mrs J. C. Morrison, who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Morrison, Culverdcn, have returned to Christchurch.
