HOME GUARD RECRUITS

FIFTY FACTORY EMPLOYEES COMMITTEE ORGANISED IN WOOLSTON Fifty men from factories in the Woolston district yesterday enrolled in the Home Guard after hearing addresses from Mr C. H. Taylor, jun., Mr H. G. Kilpatrick, and Mr A. B. Edwardes. The men have also arranged to elect a committee which will be in charge of Home Guard activities for the Woolston district. Mr Taylor reported yesterday that stop work meetings were held in the morning. The meetings, which were arranged by the employers, were held at the Woolston Tanneries, Hill’s scouring works, Allen Bros., the Marathon and Empire rubber factories, and the Davis Gelatine factory. All the employees of each establishment attended the meetings, and contact men were elected from each meeting to act as recruiting officers in their, factories. A delegate was elected from among the contact men to sit on a committee which will become the Woolston Home Guard Committee, and will be responsible for enrolments in the Woojston district.

"During the morning, 50 men came forward and enrolled,” said Mr Taylor. "That proves conclusively that once the men get to know what the Home Guard is and all about it, they will enrol.”

FIRST CHRISTCHURCH PARADES NEXT WEEK

The first parades of Christchurch members of the Home Guard will be held next week. The Christchurch Home Guard Committee has now completed the classification of recruits in districts to enable training to begin immediately, although it will probably be some time before the Christchurch units are brought up to the required strength. School grounds and buildings will be made available for training. The first parade will be at Fendalton on Monday evening, and it will precede a public meeting in St. Barnabas's Schoolroom.

The Christchurch City Council offices will be open for the enrolment of men for the Home Guard this evening, and both the council offices and the recruiting depot in the Square will be open on Saturday morning.
