BAND AFFAIRS AT LYTTELTON

TO THE EDITOR OR THE PRESS., Sir, —It is with amazement that we read of the remarks about band affairs at Lyttelton, passed at a recent meeting of the Lyttelton Borough ' Council. Cr. Sargentina states “that there was another band at Lyttelton which the council had put on its feet.” and from later remarks by the Mayor (Mr Sutton) we find this band to be the Lyttelton Marine Band. We might tell Cr, Sargentina that this organisation was on its feet long before he was a citizen or councillor of Lyttelton, owing entirely to the efforts of former bandsmen and supporters. This councillor apparently loses sight of the fact that 11 of our player members have enlisted for active service, and he must agree that this is a remarkable achievement. This band, on any request whatsoever, often at very short notice, has always turned out to assist any organisation in the port, weakened in numbers though it is. ... The Mayor (Mr Sutton), as president of the band, is aware of this and we think his remarks quite In conclusion, we might add that at present we have an enthusiastic class of young learners, and by this means we intend to hold the band together until such time as Italy and Germany have been overthrown and our soldier members safely return to us.—Yours, etc TWO BANDSMEN. Lyttelton, November 13, 1940.
