CIVILIANS’ WAR EFFORT

♦ VOLUNTARY WORKERS PRAISED GOVERNMENT’S ADVISORY COMMITTEES (I’RIISS ASSOCIATION TF.fiF.OR AM •) WELLINGTON. November 13. "The outstanding feature of the war effort of civilians in New Zealand is the work being done without payment by members of various committees and advisory bodies appointed by the Government.” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) m a statement to-night. . "They are giving much of their own ( time and energy to the tasks allotted to them,” said Mr Fraser. “I refer generally to the work of all the warlime councils and committees; but 1 desire particularly to mention the services of the War Council, the Emergency Industrial Council, the Primary Producers* Committees, and the Committee of the Economic Stabilisation Conference. Their work and advisory responsibilities have called for much effort and the continuous exercise of careful thought. Members have already sacrificed a great deal of time from their private interests. They have been willing and content to give their services freely, and with only one purpose—to promote New Zealand's war effort and the welfare of the people to the utmost of the Dominion's resources, and determination in helping to win the war. "I am glad to say. too. that in all the activities of the Government’s advisory councils and committees politics have not obtruded. All are working for the good of the State in a time of crisis, and all are agreed that such a task is above party politics. It should be clearly emphasised, also, and recorded with appreciation, that no payment is given by the Government for such effective services as I have referred to *beyond travelling and hotel expenses for those who live outside Wellington. No one is exploiting the war effort in New Zealand.”
