U.S. TROOPS IN EUROPE
♦ MADAME TABOUIS’S FORECAST “ WAR WILL BE WON BY BRITAIN ” (TEOM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON. August 1. Madame Tabouis, the French poUtieal journalist, has forecast that by the middle of next winter American troops would be in Europe; the Fascist navy would be reduced to impotence by Britain: French armies would be ■ joining the British in the Near East: and General de Gaulle’s Legion would be a great army. • * . Speaking at a National Trade Union : Club luncheon, she said: “If a mass m- : quiry were now carried out in France regarding the prospects of the new re--1 gime I am sure it would be found 1 that well over three-qfcarters of 1 France’s population of 40,000.000 would express their firm conviction that the present state of affairs will last no longer than a few months. “The French people will, by the middle of the winter, turn their eyes towards Britain as towards r light in the darkness. Britain will be the onlycountry which will have succeeded ar,checking Hitler. Their Only Hope “The most anti-BrltiSfc persons in France will then realise Britain's victory is their only hope of escaping slavery. • , “It is expected that by that time Britain will have established a very strong position against Italy, having reduced the Fascist fleet to impotence. „ _ , “The British forces in fhe Near East will then, I am sure, be joined by the French armies in North Africa. In the meantime, General de Gaulle’s Legion will have become a great army. “And so, little by little, the whole situation-will be transformed, and no dictatorship in France will then be able to prevent Frenchmen from joining the American troops, which by that time will have reached Europe. “I firmly believe that Britain will win this war, and, as a result, that my country will rise again, having fought by Britain’s side in the last round.”
