CERTIFICATED WINDING ENGINE DRIVERS
♦ PROPOSED CHANGES IN REGULATIONS [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, August 28. After the Goldfields and Mines Committee had reported three amendments to-day, the Statutes Amendment Bill was referred to the Labour Bills Committee to consider the amending the Industrial Conciliation’and Arbitration Act, the Shops and Offices Act. and the Workers’ Compensation Act. A proposed amendment allowed the secretary of the Marine Department to grant exemptions from the requirements as to certificated winding engine men. The'committee amended the clause to fix exemption for six months. This is to prevent men with interior certificates holding down a job for too long a period; but will allow them to qualify for winding engine drivers’ certificates. Another amendment prevents any man being employed,,who holds an inferior certificate when a certificated driver is available. The effect of another amendment is that a person to be given charge of a winding engine must have an engine-driver’s certificate, such as second class stationary or first-class stationary. The explanation is that it took many years to introduce measures such ns certificated winding engine-drivers in charge of winding machinery, and while there is a shortage of such drivers the committee felt that every care must be taken to prevent the taking away of the safety privileges so dearly won. __ Do you want to sell your home?
