ANNUAL BALL

AERO CLUB ENTERTAINS Hosts at the Winter Garden last evening were members of the Canterbury Aero Club, and decorations in the ballroom helped to create an atmosphere appropriate ror the occasion. Fairey Gordon propellers .and Air Force flags were prominently displayed against a background of colourful cinerarias on the orchestral dais, and hanging baskets of greenery above the dancers. Members of the organising committee were Mr R. S. Taylor (president), Messrs H. D. Christie, C, W. Evans, J. Daley. T. L. Drummond, Barnard Owen, Savage, P. R. Climie (secretary), and C. H. Clibborn (assistant secretary). As their honoured guests they had Invited Wing Commander Sir Robert Clark Hall and Lady Clark Hall, Wing Commander G. S. Hodson, and Mrs Hodson, Lady Wigram, and Sir Walter Clifford. Music was played by Harold Bailey s orchestra. FIRE BRIGADE DANCE GOLD SERVICE BARS PRESENTED The Oddfellows’ Hall at Akaroa presented a gala appearance for the annual dance held by the .Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade. Excellent arrangements for the comfort and entertainment of the guests had been made by the brigade and a women’s committee, of which Mrs W. Pool, wife ol Superintendent Pool, was convener The large number of guests included many soldiers from Burnham. Coloured lights suspended from a large central bell, flags, and flowers formed the effective decorations in the ballroom, and in the supper-room the tables were decorated with vases ol spring flowers. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs Colin Pool, Miss Merle Gilbert and Mr C. Craw, Miss Mollie Narbey and Mr J. Prendergasl. During the evening the Mayor (Mr F. R, E. Davis) presented Superintender Pool with a gold service bar for 32 years’ service with the brigade and Foreman D. Langrope, who has a total of 36 years to his credit, also received a gold service bar. Duets were sung by Miss Merle Gilbert and Lance-Corporal T. Vaatau, Miss Joy Bailey and Miss Gilbert. A violin solo was played by Mr Mitchell, and Mr K. Swainson gave a recitation. Martin Wihiata’s orchestra played the dance music, and extras were played by Mr K. Swainson and Miss Merle Gilbert. Messrs A. G. McNabb and K. Swainson were masters of ceremonies, and Messrs A. Giddens, D. Langrope, E. H. Giddens, and R. Davis were doorkeepers. DANCE AT BROADFIELD A successful dance was held in the Broadfield schoolroom to raise funds for the Broadfield Sub Centre of the Red Cross. During the evening items were given by Master F. Kennedy. Misses Jean Simpson, and Patricia Widdowson. Piano-accordion selections were played for extra dances. Novelty dances were won. by Master F. Kennedy and partner, Mrs L. Chatterton and Miss P. Wallace. Messrs C. Wallace and B. Claughton supplied the dance music, and Mr R. O. Wheeler was master of ceremonies, AKAROA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE IWrs W. A. Newton presided at the monthly meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed with relatives of Mrs Felix Brocherie, a foundation member of the institute, who died recently. Mrs Narbey was thanked for purchases made with the special money prize given by Mr P. R. Climie for the institute's “float” in the centennial profession.
