NATIONAL SECURITY TAX
TO THE EDITOB OT. THE PBESS. ■ Sir,—l have read your leading article. You State “the. National Security tax became effective only when three months and three weeks of the year had already elapsed”; and yet I am informed by a postmaster that I have to pay, exactly double for this quarter on my income (namely £l4 instead of £7). Is not the three weeks taken into account for the instalment of National Security tax payable in August? My wife paid £lO Social Security charge for the whole year, and my daughter, aged 18, 2s. Do they have to go to the post office and pay National Security now for nine months, and what will they have to pay, or will they escape, as your correspondent suggests, through P 3^ for the whole year? If they do not pay for the year, is there any penalty. Very few who have small incomes and no salary seem to understand this itch. A further explanation may clear the matter up for many besides myselt. Yours, etc.. BH T. August 19, 1940.
