CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket rooms, with Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson presiding over a good attendance, including representatives of country branches. Nurse C. Welsh’s appointment to the staff was confirmed, and Nurse Allan was granted leave of absence to at-, tend a refresher course in Dunedin. A letter was received from the Dominion secretary, stating that the biennial general conference of' the society had been postponed, the majority of the branches having approved of the executive’s recommendation that a postponement was advisable because of the war. It was reported that the cabaret in aid of funds had been a great success and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Eric Million (chairman) and his committee, to Mrs A. Rose, convener of the supper committee, and to Mr Cecil Wood, who was in charge of decorations. Mrs H. Wyatt reported that the city Council had granted the society permission to hold the street collection and sale of violets on Friday, September 13. The stalls, refreshments for helpers, flower depot, and collecting boxes will all be at the Union Jack Shop, formerly the Red Cross Shop, in High street. Gratitude was expressed for anonymous donations of £IOO- and £5 ss, also £5 frdm the Akaroa sub-branch, £5 from Calder Mackay’ s“Joke Box" competition,, and £2 2s from Mrs. Shanks. For the Lady King Karitane Hospital, the matron reported that 24 babies had been admitted. 26 discharged, and 22 were in residence. Fifteen mothers had been admitted to the motfaercraft section, and 14 discharged. The matron gratefully acknowledges the following gifts: Shrubs and plants from the parks and reserves department, a clock from the Scargill subbranch, one and a half dozen tins for waste paper from the “Dainty Inn,’’ High street, and seven pairs of bootees from Miss Furze. As fire drill is to be started at the hospital, the matron would be grateful for a large bell suitable for the purpose. For the Plunket rooms. Nurse Allan reported as follows:—Pre-natal section: New cases. 30, return visits 175, cases under observation 152; post-natal section, new baby cases, city and suburbs 144, out-stations 16; visits to homes, 566; visits to' rooms, central, 1269 adults. 695 babies; suburban, 1643 adults, 1642 babies: out-stations, 236 adults. 230 babies; pre-school section, cases transferred from baby section 37, number of visits to pre-school section 170, cases under supervision 1124. DANCE AT SUMNER A most successful dance was held in the Sumner Town Hall under the auspices of the Sumner, Rcdcliffs, and Mount Pleasant Red Cress committees and the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade. Members of the organising committee were Messrs L. G. Mitchell, P. Dick, Mesdames L. Retallick, and A. A. McDowell. Messrs J. O’Neill and C. L. Allen were masters of ceremonies. The Mayor of Sumner (Mr J. E. Tait), who was accompanied by Mrs Tail, congratulated the organisers and thanked the residents for their support.
