CONTRACT WORK ON WHARVES
Hopes for Introduction In Two or Three Weeks (rBXSS ISSOCIITtO* TELZCHASI.) AUCKLAND, August 25. That it was hoped to introduce the contract system for waterside work to the Auckland waterfront in two or three weeks was announced by the chairman of the Waterfront Control Commission (Mr R. E. Price) to-night. Mr Price, who arrived from Wellington with Mr H. McLeod, a member of the commission, said the third member of the commission, Mr James Roberts, would arrive in the morning, and that they would meet the executive of the Auckland Waterside’ Workers’ Union to discuss the introduction of a contract system. The penalties incurred by the 140 men who, claiming that they had been engaged to work with the ship’s gear, refused to continue unloading the Union Steam Ship Company s motor-ship Waiana when asked to work with cranes, would be announced to the men, said Mr Price. The penalties, he said, were quite substantial.
