OFFENSIVE TRADES
PROVISION UNDER HEALTH ACT AMENDMENT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, August 24. “Do shops that sell radio sets come under this clause?” asked Mr A. E. Jull (National, Waipawa) with a smile in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, when the Minister for Health (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) was explaining the effect of a clause in the Health Amendment Bill dealing with the question of offensive trades. “I think there are a lot more greater nuisances than that,” retorted Mr Armstrong. The Minister, in reply to a question, from Mr W. J. Broadfoot (National, Waitomo) as to what trades were likely to be affected, said that he had in mind several industries, among them the freezing works. “What about the Whakatane Paper Mills?” asked Mr F. W. Doidge (National, Tauranga). • “The Whakatane Paper Mills are specially mentioned in the notes I have before me,” ssid Mr Armstrong, who pointed out that timber mills also would come within reach of the clause. “The clause confers wider powers, remarked the Minister, “and I think it is very desirable.” The Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) referred to the clause dealing with the pollution of streams find said that it might raise some difficult problems. Some refuse was difficult to get rid of except by Washing away, and if ,^ rast ' c were taken against pollution flaxmuls would have to close down.
