GIFTS FOR LEPERS
CONSIGNMENT IN NOVEMBER Gifts for the lepers on Makogai Island are sought by Mr P. J. Twomey. th honorary collector in Christchurch, who has issued a printed appeal with illustrations and 'news of the lepers and their guardians. The approximate closing date for gifts to go on the ship is November 10. The most suitable gifts are light materials (new) for women’s and children’s clothes, silks and embroidery cottons. Singlets, sand-shoes (new), games, bats, tennis rackets, tobacco, pipes, fishing lines, sweets, soap, children's books (only in good repair' and a limited number o.f books on needlework. with or without patterns. No othbr books are being sent this year. Sun-shades or light umbrellas in good repair will also be appreciated. “When the little steamer arrives from Levuka with the-New Zealand gifts, may your little present be on board to cheer the hundreds of lepers, anxiously watching on the long white beach.” says the appeal. “Donations of money will be most useful, and will enable us to buy what is in short supply. We are grateful to the Post-master-General far having reduced charges to half-rates on all parcels addressed to me for the lepers. All donations will be acknowledged by rr)e personally.
