A meeting of the executive committee of the North Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes was held recently, with Mrs T .W. Macleod presiding. It was d Jed to grant extended leave of absence to Mrs A. Ashworth (Sefton), The following nominations for group conveners were confirmed: Mrs B. Tweedie (Cheviot group), Mrs C. Foster (Omihi group). Reference was made to the work done by the late Miss Frances L. Cooper. ... It was decided that the half-yearly meeting arranged to be held at Sefton on October 18 would definitely be held. The president, Mrs J. W. Macleod, was congratulated on receiving the gold honours badge for her services to institutes with the helper scheme. Mrs T. D. Mac Donald,, who had been in charge of the Women's Institute group travel trip to Mount Cook, reported that the trio had been most successful. A suggestion from the institute round table conference that institute members should give holidays to children of men serving overseas was well received. It was pointed out that members could take these children into their homes in the country during holidays. It was decided to make further inquiries about the best arrangements. LITTLE RIVER The monthly meeting of the Little River Women's Institute was held in the Town Hall on Friday. Miss Ngairc White presided. A demonstration of hairpin work was given by Mesdames Wright and W. Mould. Competitions rcsu’ted:—B ult e r sponge; Mrs Graham 1, Mrs Shadbolt 2, Mrs A. Patten 3. Sample of knitting; Mrs Graham 1, Miss White 2, Mrs Shadbolt- 3. Mantel yase decoration: Mrs Graham 1, Mrs Patten 2, Mrs A. Mould 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Graham, Kelso, Radford, and Miss Webster. COALGATE Mrs M. Kellaway presided at the August meeting of the Coalgate Women's Institute, which was held in the Coalgate Masonic Hall. The roll call was “A cold remedy.” Mrs Fowler gave a talk on “Women of Other Nations.” Results of competitions were:— Scones: Mrs C. Green 1. Mrs S. W. Beatty 2, Mrs P. Prestidge 3. Best blooms: Mrs C. Green 1, Mrs E. Charles 2, Mrs P. Prestidge 3. • The hostess was Mrs S. W. Beatty. LAKESIDE One new member was welcomed at the monthly meeting of the Lakeside Women’s Institute by the president, Mrs W. Lambie. Many parcels were received for the Lady Galway Guild and packed. A talk on the history and progress of the institute movement was given by Mrs E. Hanna, who also supervised a display of folk dancing. Competitions resulted: —Posy bowl of spring flowers; Mrs H, R. McLaughlin 1, Mrs L. Cooper and Mrs J. Whisker (equal) 2. Bloom; Mrs J. Anderson 1 and 3, Miss.Graham 2. Sausage rolls; Mrs L. Cooper 1 and 2. Crocheted d’oyley: Mrs J. S. McCormick 1, Mrs L. Hantz 2. Juniors—Posy bowl: Miss I Nairn 1. Miss L. Lambie 2. Bloom: Miss Lambie 1 and 3, Miss Nairn 2. GLENTUNNEL Mrs G. D. Marsh presided over the monthly meeting of the Glentunnel Women’s Institute. Mrs Eric Watson, Coalgate, gave a talk on her recent visit to Ireland, and described England in war time. Mrs Blair was the winner of the wandering shilling. Miss Noeline Smith was the winner of the composition conducted by Mrs W. Smith. / , Competitions resulted:—Bloom; Mrs W. Tarling 1, MisS D. Beatty 2, Miss L. Marsh 3. Home-made recipe for kitchen: Mrs W. Sniith 1, Mrs L. A. Marshall 2, Mrs G. D. Marsh 3. Hostesses were Mesdames L. A. Marshall and E. Burmeister. TUAHIWI Mrs Rennie presided at the monthly meeting of the Tuahiwi Women’s Institute. Members of this institute have been contributing fid each every month towards parcels for soldiers overseas. It was decided that Mrs Pohio and Mrs Ryan should represent the institute on the Rangiora Patriotic Committee. Mrs Pohio was thanked for a donation of a prize to the runner-up for the silver cup presented by Mrs Rennie. Results of the competitions were:— Cushion, Mrs Uru 1, Mrs D. Reuben 2; girdle scones, Mrs Harris 1, Mrs Reuben, sen., 2, Mrs D. Reuben 3; jar of violets, Mrs Uru 1, Mrs D. Reuben 2, Mrs Harris 3; small bloom, Mrs Hadfield. sen., 1. Mrs Harris 2. Mrs Tainui. jun„ 3; best bloom. Mrs T. Ryan 1. Mrs Uru 2, Mrs Harris 3. The hostesses were Mrs Hadfield and Mrs Uru.
