RACING AND TROTTING
METKOPOLITAN T.C. THIRD DAY'S PROSPECTS With two days' splendid racing, the jf eff Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will conclude its meeting at Addington to-day. and prospects are for a fi ne track and another day of excellent sport. The fields are again evenly balked and of good quality, and the parlier racing at the meeting will have moroved some of the starters. There was quite an improvement in the form chown by several horses on the second Hay compared with first day's running snd this is only to be expected at this season of the year. The club has been lucky in the weather for the opening days and the ' fast times registered show the excellence of "the Addington clay track. The National Handicap will be the nrincipal attraction to-day, and as in Previous years it may give a guide as to New Zetaland Cup prospects, although the comparatively loose class, 4min 28sec for two miles, does not cater for the champion pacers. The great form shown by Marlene at the meeting will naturally be noted by speculators, and as she will be coupled with Plutus she may be favourite on the machine. Dusky Sound has graduated through the classes, and is now a strong competitor in any class of race. A rare he will start from nearer the limit than is usually the case and he will be prominent throughout. Lightning Lady and Donald Dhu are in rare form, and R. B. Berry will produce a strong bracket in Great Jewel and Southern Chief, both great pacers that have done a good season's racing. Berry has yet to win a race at the meeting, but his team is in excellent order and his turn may come to-day. Bush Laddie did not make a very Impressive showing on the first day, but like many other horses he may be improved by his race and at his best he will make a brave showing in the Midwinter Handicap, while in the second event, the Lightning Handicap, an even field should make for a great race. Bowi fell on Wednesday and there is no line on his form, but on his day he is above the average, while Three Tens may have been unlucky in his last attempt Willowbank comes from Southland with a great reputation that he has not yet justified, but he will have a further opportunity to-day. Trireme and Ned Worthy must also be considered. A small field in the Heathcote Handicap shou.d provide a fast-run race and -Acuity's impressive running on the first day will not have been forgotten." Accountant claims two engagements and in whichever race he starts he will be a problem. In the Federal Handicap King Potts, Gold Bankv Loyal Rey, Nelson Eddy, Ferry Post and Sandusky are all improvers and good two milers, while the unhoppled trotters' race of two. mDes should be one of the most exciting events on the card. C. S. Donald will have another strong bracket in the Islington Handicap in Accountant, Carver Doone. and Ferry Post, and his elect may be hard to dispose of. while Pot Luck on 48yds is a possibility. v The final event of the meeting is the mile saddle race for 2min Msec to the mile class pacers. In this race horsemanship will count for a good deal, and on a good track fast time should be recorded. The following.horses should race . prominently:— Midwinter Handicap—Bush Laddie, Houghton Feast, Parrish Guide. j Lightning Handicap Willowbank.) -Three Tens, Coquette. Heathcote Handicap—Acuity, Waipahi, Smile Again. National Handicap—Marelene, Dusky Sound, Southern Chief. Federal Handicap—Accountant, Loyal Rey, Ringtrue. Thoroughbred Sale The annual bloodstock sale conducted by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., and Wright, Stephenson, and Company. Ltd., will be held at Tattersall’s at 9.30 to-day. The entries include brood mares, horses in training, and juveniles. and the English sire Roydon will also be submitted. t Proved Staying Strain The success of Wagner in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton yesterday pointed further to the staying qualities ,of the Siegfried blood which has been much in evidence both in New Zealand and Australia in recent years. | Siegfried, who last season was represented by Yours Truly (New Zealand Cup) and Old Bill (Wellington Cup), is again standing the season, at the Otautau Stud, where Salmagundi is also at the service of breeders. Explanation Accepted The only judicial inquiry held at Riccarton at this week’s meeting to date was called yesterday into the running of Aussie' Ra in the Grand National Hurdle Race as compared with his form in the Trial Hurdle Race on the first day. After hearing the evidence of P. Johnson, trainer, and J. Chaplin, rider of Aussie Ra, the explanations were accepted. Two-year-old Parade The state of the track accounted for only five, of the two-year-olds entered for yesterday’s parade . at .Ricqarton putting in appearances, and they were sprinted down the straight. Desert Maid, by Nigger Minstrel from Spear-’ maid.., dam of Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy) finished in front of Renarde, by Foxbridge from Aureola, with Miss Jessica, by Theio from Sicilan, Verlagia by Vermeer from Pelagia, and Theiomint, by Theio from Gaimint. close up next. There was no suggestion of the youngsters being put on trial, and owing to the soft ground, none was asked to gallop seriously, but the parade was nevertheless a source of interest. A Promising Gelding Greenbank was responsible for an encouraging performance in filling third place in the Woolston, Hack Handicap yesterday. This was his third race only,, and he tool; some time to settle down to his task, with the result that with hall the journey covered he had allowed the field to get away from him, and it was not until the closing stages that he became prominent. He is a well-grown four-year-old by Paladin, and closely resembles Aussie Ra in colour and conformation. His dam. Universal, is by Arrowsmith from Differential, dam of Queen of Song. Universal is also the dam of Gusterina. a winner in Otago last season. Greenbank is a long striding galloper, and has given indications in his track work of developing into a useful stayer. Kurow Jockey Club The Kurow Jockey Club has issued the programme for its annual race meeting to be held on the Oamaru racecourse on September 28. The stakes have been increased by £215, making a total for the eight races of £950. thus bringing the programme almost into line with the stakes usually given at an Oamaru fixture. The Kurow Cup, one mile and a quarter, carries a stake of £l5O, including a trophy ,to the value of £25, and the T. A. Munro Handicap, of seven furlongs, will be worth £135, as against £IOO last year. The High-weight Handicap, of £125, one mile, Hydro Hack Handicap, of £l2O, seven furlongs; Gillies’ Hack Handicap, of £l2O, six furlongs, and the Trial Stakes, of £75, for non-win-ners of a race to the value of £SO, are other events on the card. / TROTTING NOTES Answer to Correspondent Enquirer, Christchurch; M. Stewart drove Toorak on the first day of the meeting. Sale of Trotting Stock The Grand National sale of trotting stock conducted by Messrs H. Matson and Company will be held at Tattersall’s Horse Bazaar on Monday, commencing at 9 a.m. Punctuality in Business A feature of the racing at Addington has been the punctuality observed in' the closing of the totalisator,* and the prompt speculation has materially helped towards the enjoyment of -the meeting. The totalisator accommodation' at Addington has proved sufficient for all requirements, and with the co-operation of the public the machine proprietor. Mr H. E. poggm, anticipates no difficulty to-day. A* Strong Team With Marlene (2), Captain Bolt, and Accountant, C. S. Donald has already won four races at the meeting, and another strong team engaged to-day may find further successes coming his way Marlene, Plutus, Accountant, Mazaire. Ferry Post, Captain Bolt Tan John, and Repeal represent a strong team from the Belfast stable. A Good Track The grounds committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club inspected the track at Addington yesterday and found it to be iiv first-class order. The heavy ram of. the last two days has had little ,effect. The times during the meeting have been exceptionally fast in the different classes and with improving horses records may be broken to-day.
Horsemanship When Rowi fell shortly after the start of the Canterbury Handicap on Wednesday and catapulted P. Gallagher from the sulky, the dnyer earned the applause of the public with a quick recovery and a smart dash to his horse, who was still on the ground. Gallagher immediately had his horse under control and by his quick action prevented him from careering round the track and iiiter'ering with other horses. It was a smart piece of work on the part of a good horseman.Totalisator Investments For the first two days of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August meeting the totalisator has handled £103.377. as against £89.525 12 months ago. an increase of £13,853. On the third day last year the investments amounted to £48,891. which brought the total for, the meeting up £138,415, as against £113,903. in 1938.
