GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES
Limbohm Narrowly Defeats
Aussie Ra
The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National Steeplechase meeting was continued at Riccarton yesterday and provided another successful day’s racing. There were rain squalls throughout the morning, and although there was a suggestion that a postponement would be seriously considered, the decision to carry on turned out to be a wise one, as conditions gradually improved as the day progressed, and the programme was got through without any discomfort.
The attendance, although it was no doubt affected by the uninviting outlook, was quite good, and in spite of the change in track conditions causing upsets in earlier form, and reducing some of the fields,-the totalisator turnover amounted to £45,642 10s, as against £46,612 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £969 10s. The total for the two completed days is £121,077, as compared with £113,761 last year, an increase of £7316. The track had a thorough soaking with the rain that fell throughout Wednesday night, and the going cut up badly during the afternoon. This accounted for some unusually slow times for a Riccarton meeting.
The Grand National Hurdle Race was the main attraction, and this resulted in a narrow win for the promoted hack, Limbohm, who had won the Trial Hurdles on the first day from Aussie Ra, the latter coming with a late run to suffer a narrow defeat only. Yesterday the pair had a memorable fight from the last fence, and nobody could venture to suggest the winner until the numbers went up, Limbohm winning by the narrowest of margins right on the line. The favourite, Tidewaiter, who .did not jump as well as previously, was well beaten into third place, while the Auckland visitor, Jewelled Girdle, was well back owing mainly to some faulty efforts.
There was only one cross-country •vent, the Beaufort Steeplechase, for horses that had not won a steeplechase of the value of £4OO, and again several falls marred the contest, which was won by La Boca, who, in spite of his win on the first day, was allowed to return double figures. Blue Steel once " more caused plenty of thrills by his erratic jumping out in front of <the field, and although it was generally expected that he would not ..survive the journey, he got round safely, but was decisively beaten by La Boca. The Islington Handicap was won by Wagner, who outstayed an outsider in Wardress. Wagner, who won the Heathcote Handicap on the third day last year, is owned by Mr D. O. Rutherford, of Christchurch, and his win was popularly received. The state of-the going accounted for the absence from, the race of Catalogue, who will, however, be started to-morrow if cony ditidns are more favourable., ' The Spreydon Hack Hurdle Race was ' marked by an uncommon succession of mishaps-in such an event, no fewer than six horses being eliminated in the first half-mile. Fortunately all the riders involved escaped injury with the exception of L. Clutterbuck, rider of Auctor, who fell at the second fence. He was taken to hospital with an injured shoulder. and his condition was reported last night to be satisfactory. The arangements were once more 1 carried out . with eyery dispatch, and the strict observance of the time-table was again appreciated by all. The winner was Augment, who had raced well at Trentham in heavy ground, but who disappointed on Tuesday. Taxpaye , Baldoon, and Jolly Time were the most prominent- entering the course P r °Per. with Augment, Wild Coon, and All Night handy. Augment drew out a furlong from the post and was never in danger of being overhauled. All Night finished well for second money, while Coup d’Etat got beat Wild CoOn on the post for third money. There was then a gap to Circular Note, Blue Abbey, Whiphand. and Pleading. The winner is a stable-mate of Montana, and is a half -brother by Inflation to Poniard, who also raced well in winter conditions. All Night created a good impression in his second appearance in public. He is trained by W McDonald, who has not taken an active part in the game for some years until he took over this horse a few months back. Both Taxpayer and Jolly Time failed to stay on. Meritorious Win Prudent Prince scored a meritorious win in the Sumner Handicap. The early leaders were Islay Downs, Raroa, Great Night,, and Arabic, Dranoel, Rebellion, and Richelieu Pearl being the slowest to move off. Islay Downs and Raroa were still together in front entering the straight, with Great Night, Arabic, Kilometre, and Prudent Prince close up. Prudent Prince gradually improved his position when the straight was reached and showed out from Arabic a furlong from the post. In a hard tussle between this pair Prudent Prince stayed on too well for Arabic, who, however, kept him up to his task. Iceland Spar;came with a late run to get up for third -money a head in front of Kilometre. There was then a gap to Dranoel, with Scarteen, Captain Efuce, Raroa, a!nd Islay Downs next.- ; ",.v, ' ' The winner’s success'was well overdue, although he had paid his way during -the-last season-by several minor placings. Arabic was made favourite on the strength- of his form at 'Trentham, but met his match in the Riccarton gelding. Iceland Spar had,, a lot of ground to make up in the run home and would have been closer up in another few strides. , .. )
La Boca Again The Beaufort Steeplechase was full of incident As on the first day, Blue Steel soon ran to the front and led over the kennels double, the second fence, well clear of Gay Boa, La Boca, and Lactose. Valens fell at the first of the double, and Golden Glow fell over him. Blue Steel wgs some 50 yards in front of Lactose, Gay Boa, La Boca in that order going out of the straight for the last round, but Gay Boa fell at Cutts’s, and Lactose set off after Blue Steel, who was commencing to show signs of tiring after jumping the kennels the second time. Lactose, however, fell at the sod wall near the five furlong post, and La Boca then went on to challenge the leader, who narrowly missed falling after landing over the top brush. La Boca gradually reduced the gap, and headed off Blue Steel turning for home, and jumping the last fence well clear of him, carried on for an easy win. Baltruin struggled on for third money a long way back. Both Gay Boa and Golden Glow were remounted, but did not complete the course. La Boca again deserved his success, as he jumped well throughout. Blue Steel gave another mixed display. He jumped some fences dashingly, but hit others both fore and aft, and then found difficulty in keeping his feet on landing. Gay Boa did not go as well as on the first day, and appeared to be weakening when he went out. Lactose would probably have disputed matters with La Boca but for his one and only bad jump.
A Wide Margin Boloyna justified his favouritism for the Woolston Hack Handicap by one of the easiest wins in a flat race at the meeting. Race Well soon went to the front and had a clear lead turning for home from Synthetic, The Vulture, Boloyna, Johnemby, and Hasten. Boloyna shot through on the fence as soon as the run to the post was entered upon, and gradually increasing his lead won easing up from Hasten, who was stopping badly, and only survived for second by a neck from Greenbank, who was in last place at the straight entrance. Gold Spot also came from well back to be two lengths away in front of Johnemby and Prince Ruenalf. Boloyna outclassed the opposition, and his decisive victory emphasised his bad luck in being beaten by Hasten at Trentham. The latter slowed up nearing the post and would have been beaten by Greenbank in another stride. Greenbank went back to last place shortly after the start, and was three lengths in the rear of the field until well into the straight. Synthetic and The Vulture were slow away, but turned on a burst of speed round the top, and were among the leaders at the straight entrance, only to fail taking part in the final stages. Gold Spot, carrying the same colours as Jewelled Girdle, attracted attention by also being slow away, and finishing strongly into fourth place. Grand National Hurdles Recollection, Kaiwaka, and Hunting Chorus were withdrawn from the Grand National Hurdle Race, and Tidewaiter was sent out a much better favourite than Aussie Ra. who was a little better supported than Clarion Call. Norseman went to the front at the first fence, Limbohm dwelling on the mark and losing several lengths. Norseman carried on in front until Tidewaiter joined . him passing the stands, there being little pace on up to this stage. This was indicated by Limbohm making up his ground in the first six furlongs, and going to the front turning out of the straight for the second and last round. Limbohm was joined by Aussie Ra in the back stretch, and the pair carried on round the top where they were joined by Tidewaiter, who, however, was not able to hold his position and Streamline took his place turning into the straight. Limbohm and Aussie Ra jumped the last fence abreast, both making faulty efforts and pecking on landing. They then settled down to a grim struggle, and although Limbohm always held a slight advantage, Aussie Ra gave indications of overhauling him, and the issue was in doubt until the last stride, • Limbohm getting a half head verdict. Streamline fell heavily’ at the last fence, and Tidewairer struggled on for third money over 10 lengths in front of Clarion Call. Norseman followed at a big interval, and Jewelled Girdle was about a furlong away. The finish was the most gruelling seen between two horses for a long time, and they were under'punishment for over a furlong with only a narrow margin between them throughout; Limbohm made a sudden rise from hack class to win such an important race. He lost a lot of ground at the start, and actually did not find his feet until the others were well on the way. This, however, did not have a serious effect as the leaders slowed up the field for the first mile, and were only at a strong working pace until the last half-mile was begun. Aussie Ra put up a game fight, but had to be content with another minor placing in a big hurdle race. Streamline, although he would have been third* but for his mistake, was tiring at the time, and would have had a- hard task to have challenged the two leaders. Clarion Call was never likely, and is undoubtedly not partial to soft going. Jewelled Girdle narrowly missed falling with a round to go, and thereafter was out oj the contest. x Chapter of Accidents The good field of 10 paraded for the Spreydon Hurdles, but this was reduced by three falling at the second fence, apd three at the third fence. Sir Frederick and In the Dark, Araboa and Auctor were the leaders to the second fence, where Auctor fell, and Airdrie and Half and Half fell over him. In’ the Dark had a substantial lead'going, out of the straight from Esperance Bay and Sir Frederick, but stopped at the hurdle near the nine furlong post, and his rider rolled over the fence. Ruling Star then collided with In the Dark, and in pushing him over the fence crashed himself, and Hunting Chorus fell over the pair. Esperance Bay then went to the front, from Master Dingle, and led into the straight, but Master Dingle weakened and Sir Frederick followed Esperance Bay over the last fence, with Araboa making a fast forward move. Sir Frederick made a bold showing, but Esperance Bay always held him safe. Master Dingle and Araboa had a hard struggle for third money, the former gaining a head verdict. Esperance Bay gave an excellent display, and although the result may have been different but for the mishaps, he had a well deserved win. Sir Frederick gave an attractive performance for .a novice hurdler and hung on stubbornly. Araboa looked likely when he moved up to the leaders going to the last fence, but that was the limit of his effort. Wagner Prevails The withdrawals of Catalogue, Haughty Winner, and Lockit reduced the strength of the field for the Islington Handicap, but did not affect the brisk speculation on the event. Cherokee, Shanghai Lily, Dictate, and Balmenter were the slowest away, and the early leaders were Lazybones and Little Robin, who carried on abreast to the home turn, where The Wrecker drew out to the straight entrance from Wardress, Kilrobe. Young Charles, Little Robin, and Valantua. Wardress went to the front as soon as the run home was commenced, and, quickly opening up a useful gap from Balmenter and Wagner, looked to be in for a surprise win, but Wagner gradually ■ ore her down in the last half-furlong, and beat her fairly comfortably. Balmenter was a creditable third, two lengths in front of Valantua with Little Robin and Anita Foe together next in front of Hanlon, Dictate, and Cape Gabo. Wagner, with conditions and distance to suit, won by superior staying ability. Wardress ran her best race for a long time, and’ paid a big place dividend. The Wrecker and Spanish Lad were both in trouble a good way from the p. ;t. Impressive Success There were Several surprise defections from the August Handicap, including Haughty Winner, Lady Tinkle, and’ Mittie; and Sleeveless was considered the best proposition, but,the consistent‘North Island filly had to submit to a decisive; win by St. Cloud. Rebel Star soon went to the front and led round the top and into the straight from Grey Honour, Sleeveless. , St: Cloud, ad Black Thread., St. Cloud
drew to the front early in the run home, and although Sleeveless put in spme good work, St. Cloud gradually increased her lead and beat her by four lengths. Black Thread was a good third, clear of Waitaka and Flame Queen together, with Night Dress in front of the remainder. St. Cloud recorded an attractive performance and had the race in hand more than a furlong from the post. Sleeveless had\to be credited with a game effort under her big weight, while Black Thread did well under the conditions. Grey Honour, Thermidor, and Night Hawk were well enough placed early in the run home to have every chance, but all drifted when pressure was applied.
