SOCIAL GATHERING
FRIENDS OF ST. HELENS A pleasant social gathering, attended by nearly 60 guests, was held at St. Helens Hospital yesterday afternoon by the Friends of St. Helens, Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston (president) welcomed the visitors, and said that, once again St. Helens Hospital. Christchurch. had won distinction in the recent examination of midwives. as one member of the staff. Miss Frances Paltie. tied for first place in the Dominion. In the two preceding years. Mrs Kent-Johnston sa'd. nurses from St. Helens. Christchurch, had topped the lists. She expressed pleasure at the recent announcement shade by the Minister for Health that tenders would soon be called for the building of the new St. Helen'- Hosnital ai-H thanked tlm Mayor (Mr R. M, Macfarlane, M.P.) for his continued practical interest in the work of the society Among the guests were representatives of the Catholic Women’s League. Townswomen’s Guild, and We'd of England Society, all of whom 1 t 4 helncd the society during the vear A pleasant prowamme. arranged by Mrs Alfred Sandston. was much enjoyed. Songs were sung by Mrs C. Deeming and Mrs Sandston. for whom Mrs J. C. Cullman played the accompaniments. recitations were given by Mrs Hughes, and an entertaining Scottish sketch was read by Mrs Sandston and Mrs Hughes. Tea was sewed by the matron (Miss E. Sparkes) and the nursing staff.
