VISITORS FOR RACE WEEK
LARGE DEMAND ON ACCOMMODATION Public and private hotels and boardinghouses in Christchurch are at present dealing with a very heavy demand for acommodation for race week visitors. The demand is stated to be well up to that experienced in previous years. Most of the larger hotels reported yesterday that their available accommodation was alread; fully booked for the coming week. Some of those seeking accommodation had to be referred elsewhere. Several of the smaller hotels were in a similar position, although some still had rooms available. They expected these would be booked within the next few days. One hotel had provided temporary accommodation for visitors. Another, fully booked up, had had difficulty in finding elsewhere the accommodation asked. A number of inquirers had been placed in private board. Private hotels are experiencing a similar demand. The steamer express, service will be carrying a large increase in passengers. It was stated for the Union Steam Ship Company that bookings were heavy, but there should be no likelihood of any traveller being unable to get a berth. It seemed at the moment that tin. fullest ships would be at the end of the week.
