U.S. ARMAMENT FACTORIES
4 . PLAN FOR CONSTRUCTION ANNOUNCED WASHINGTON, August 7. The United States Assistant-Secretary of War (Mr Robert Patterson) has announced the establishment of a chain of 60 armaments factories throughout the United States, at a cost of 700,000,000 dollars, to supply a potential army of 2,000,000 men. This step was necessary, for the safety of the United States until final peace was assured, he said. Mr Samuel King, Hawaiian delegate to Congress, urged the extension of the declaration of Havana to strategic Pacific islands, pointing out that the United States is constructing a naval and air base at Palmyra, which would be threatened if Fanning and Christmas islands were transferred to an unfriendly Power.
