the Christchurch City Council asked this council for advice?” asked Mr P. G. Stevens at a meeting of the Canterbury District Pig Council last evening. “The City Council is probably not aware of the function of this council, which is to organise the pig industry in the northern half of the South Island.” he said. “This council maintains the advisory service of a supervisor whose experience and service are available for furthering the interests of the pig industry.” Dr. G. E. Gillett (chairman) said that he knew of no inquiry from the City Council, but that the pig council should not thrusUits advice on anyone, , . “I think we should o'l'er advice now rather than let them make a mess of the city pig farm so that we’d have to go and clean it up," said Mr Stevens. He added that local bodies elsewhere had employed supervisors even to the extent of having them arrange the planning and construction of new piggeries, “As a matter of fact, if the council had had some advisory service on all of these little schemes they have floated they might have been able to save at least some of them,” said Mr Stevens. He said that some publicity had been given to the scheme which did not read w£ll. The council had bought sows they knew nothing about at a price which seemed favourable to the producer, but that was no good. Dr. Gillett said that if the pig council proffered advice to the City Council the latter would probably reply that it had men of good experience on the job. The City Council will receive a letter offering the services of the pig council and of its supervisor (Mr W. H, Mclntosh).
