CHILDREN COLLECT £ls
- * , WAIAU SCHOOL AMBULANCE FUND CONTRIBUTION The‘pupils of" the Waiau School, 55 in number, have sent to Mr L. E. Rowley, secretary of the Canterbury Education Board £ls which they collected for the School Ambulance Fund organised by the, Education Board. In a covering letter, the teacher explained that the children had raised £lO from the sale of bottles alone, and that they had not accepted so much as a penny from their parents. . Joan Forbes, the schoolgirl who is secretary of the Waiau School Ambulance Fund, wrote to the secretary of the Board: “Dear Sir. —We are enclosing £ls for the School Ambulance Fund. This money was earned by the : schoolchildren themselves. It was made by collecting arid selling bottles. We also cleaned the school for a short time while the caretaker was away. We also earned money by collecting and selling cones.” The Canterbury Education Board, said Mr Rowley, aimed at collecting a sum of £2500 through th* .fund; but already, from fewer than 100 schools in the Canterbury Education district, a sum of more than , £I4OO had been received, and there were nearly 300 schools that still, had to send in their quotas. From some schools the collections had worked out at as much as 5s a head, whereas the suggestion of the board had been for children to collect, by such methods as the Waiau schoolchildren used. Is 6d each. The appeal closes at the end of this term. September 2;, but it is hoped, Mr Rowlev explained, to get all the money in by August 17.
