—_♦ SLIGHT INCREASE RECORDED [Prom Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. August 1. An increase of 152 in the number of children who appeared before Children’s Courts compared with the number the previous’year is recorded in the report of the superintendent of the Child Welfare branch (Mr J. R. McClune) for the year ended March 31, 1040, which has been presented in the House' of* Representatives. The ' total was 2953, compared with 2801 the year before. “This increase is almost wholly due to the increase In charges of theft, which number 829 against the previous year’s total of 650, ,T the, report says. “Of the total number appearing this year.; 812 placed under the supervision of child welfare officers, wnile 21 had their supervision , period extended within the same period. Of the children placed under supervision; 28 were subsequently committed to the care of the superintendent."
