Bing Crosby Film For Avon

When Dr. Walter Damrosch, 77-year-old; dean of American orchestra conductors made his debut before the cameras - in “The Star Maker,” Paramount's singing cavalcade, which- is coming soon to the Avon, he did so in surroundings which -were very familiar to him. Tfhe set represented the interior of Carnegie Hall, which Dr. Damrosch persuaded Andrew Carnegie to build, and'which the conductor'opened with a symphony concert in 1891. Furthermore, of the numerous members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra who worked with Dr. DamroSch in the picture, 22 previously had playedunder his direction in New York, and many, of them were members of the New York Symphony Orwhich Dr. Damrosch took on a European tour in 1920—the first appearance of ah American symphony orchestra abroad. Besides conducting the orchestra in Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Damrosch also leads the orchestral accompani-

ment of a classical solo number by Linda Ware, 14-year-old singing discovery who makes her movie debut in “The Star-Maker.”

"The Star Maker,” which was suggested by the career of the famed showman Gus Edwards, features Bing Crosby, Louise Campbell. Miss Ware, and Ned Sparks. Many Gus Edwards songs and four new numbers are heard in the picture. The picture was produced by' Charles R. Rogers, and directed /by Roy Dei Ruth; Among the numbers which are sung by Bing Crosby, Linda Ware, and by groups of talented children are: “In My Merry , Oldsmobile,” "Sunbpnnet Sue,” “Look Out for Jimmy Valentine.” "If I Were a Millionaire,” “School Days,” “I Can’t Tell Why I Love You. but I Do,” "Tammany,” “By the Light of the Silvery Moon,” and “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her , Now.” The story of “The Star Maker” tells how Bing, as a penniless song writer and hoofer, makes his way to the top in the' entertainment world by making stars out of talented children.
