RANGIORA NOTES PATRONAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATED The patronal festival of St. John’s Anglican Church, Rangiora, was celebrated yesterday, St. John’s Day. Holy Communion in the morning and a festival evensong last evening were both | well attended by parishioners and friends. In the evening, the preacher was. the Rev. J. F. Feron, formerly of Rangiora, and now vicar of Opawa. The Yen. Archdeacon A. C. Purchas, of Christchurch, and formerly of Rangiora, and Canon G. Nelham Watson assisted at the service. The choir of St. Mark’s Church, Opawa, combined with the St. John’s choir under Mr G. Gibbs Jordan for the musical part of the service. Afterwards a parish social was held at which members of the visiting choir gave several items. Special services were also held at the church on Sunday. Linen Flax Growing After an address by Mr A. S. Nash, Instructor in Agriculture at Rangiora, on the growing of linen flax and the proposed Government contract terms, a meeting of farmers at Oxford expressed favourable interest in the scherhe. About 600 acres of land for the growing of the flax was offered and the following committee was appointed to assist Mr Nash in the district:—Messrs J. E. McGrath, W. Reid, and A. Titheridge. Poultry Show Entries Entries for the North Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club’s annual show at Rangiora on July 5 and 6 totalled 480 yesterday afternoon. There were more than 1000 entries for last year’s show. Basketball Draw The draw for matches in the North Canterbury Basketball Association’s competitions on Saturday is:—Sefton A v. Amberley, Rangiora C v. Sefton B, Pipiwharauroa v. Balcairn B, Balcairn A v. Woodend. Red Cross Funds Final donations to the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund, amounting to £35 9s 2d, have been recer-ed by the appeals sub-committee of the Rangiora Patriotic Commiteee. The donations are:—Cust Sub-Centre, £2O; Waikuku Red Cross, £7 11s; C. Mehrtens, £1 10s; P. Power, £2; Palmer and Doak, Ltd.’s, staff, £1 2s 6d; Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade, £2 2s; Cust Anglican Church, £1 3s Bd.NATIONAL FITNESS CENTRE ESTABLISHMENT IN RANGIORA A national fitness centre under the control of the Physical Welfare and Recreation branch of the Department of Internal Affairs has been established in Rangiora. The recreation officer for Canterbury (Miss Joyce Adams), , who visited the town yesterday, will supervise the centre, and classes for women, business girls, and children will start on Monday. Miss Adams said that the campaign was to give ! women an opportunity to become , physically fit for any work that they may be required to do during the war. ; The system in New Zealand, she added, would be similar- to that of the Board 1 of Education in England. The following committee has been appointed to conduct the activities of , the Rangiora Centre:—Mesdames M. A, 1 Ellen, A. L. Lockhart. L. H. Hindle, : C. W. Bell, and Misses H. Mclntosh, M. Seed, J. Wright, F. Jennings, M. Hut- ; cheon, and Fraser. 1 WAIKARI RED CROSS ANNUAL MEETING Mrs B. L. Blunden presided over a good, attendance at the annual meeting of the Waikari sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. The president stated that the district appeal conducted by the sub-centre for the Sick. Wounded, and Distress Fund had been completed, with the total more than £462. Mrs Blunden was appointed delegate to the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs B. L. Blunden; vicepresidents, , Mesdames J, B. Page, H. Phillips, and S. L. Boon; secretary, Mrs G. W. Soal; treasurer, Mrs S. L. Boon; committee, Mesdames M. F. Macfarlane, W. Irvine, J. Hiscocks, D. Mowatt, R. Tucker, J. Reader', W. Traill, J. R. Mounsey, H. Saundercock, F. L. Hook and Misses C. Hall, E. Dron, and A. Trounce. A supply of wool and material was distributed for making into various articles for the. fighting forces. V LEITHFIELD PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE At a well-attended combined meeting of the Leithfield Patriotic Committee and Red * Cross sub-centres of Leithfield and Leithfield beach,, Mr A. McLean was chairman. Final arrangements were made to conduct a hare driye, a jumble sale, and a dance On Friday. The secretary reported that the day’s collection on June 15 resulted in £56 being collected in cash, and several sheep, pigs, potatoes, and all kinds of vegetables, fruit, jams, cakes, and other goods for the jumble sale. It is hoped that by this effort a sum of about £l5O will be realised for the Patriotic Funds. DUNSANDEL CROQUET CLUB The annual meeting of the Dunsandel Ladies’ Croquet Club was held at the home of Mrs J. H. Skinner, who presided over a good attendance. The secretary (Mrs H. A. Brown) reported a successful season, and a satisfactory balance-sheet. Trophies won during the season were presented by Mrs Skinner. The election of officers resulted;— President, Mrs H. A. Brown; vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames John Boag and F. Chamberlain; secretary and- treasurer, Mrs J. H. Skinner; committee, Mesdames John Walked, E. G. Wright, H. W. Johnson, and E. Upston. A bring-and-buy sale was held in conjunction with the meeting and the sum of £2 was given to the Red Cross fund.
PERSONAL NOTES RANGIORA The Rev. Father J. A. _ McKay, of Rangiora, has been appointed a chaplain to the forces, and will go into camp at Burnham on Monday. Mr E. T. Hubbard (Rangiora) returned by air on Saturday from a holiday tour of the North Island, in company with his parents, Mr and Mrs T. Hubbard (Greenpark). PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE FORMED ORGANISATION SET UP FOR WAIREWA COUNTY • A public meeting called by the Wairewa County Council to consider the organisation of a district effort for patriotic purposes was held in the Little River Town Hall. Mr F. Coop presided. Dr. J. Leslie Will addressed the meeting, and outlined the functions of the various patriotic organisations that had been established. : The following committee was appointed: Members of the Wairewa County Council, president of the Women’s Institute, treasurer of the Soldiers’ Welfare Committee, president of the, Kaituna Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mrs Archer, Mrs W. Stanbury, Miss Archer, Messrs N. Gardner, W. Bulman, C. Craddock, L. Brown, D. Stuart, N. Withell, L. Coop, J. Chapman, H. Mould, E. Patten, M. Wilkins. L. Prettyjohns, W. Mould, P. Ussher, ,E. Ussher, S. S. Barclay, E. White, A. Sutherland, Dr. Burnett, the Rev. A. H. Barnett, Messrs J. Daniels, D. Anderson, W. Stanbury, O. Stanbury, Topi Robinson. MARSHLAND SCHOOL REUNION There was a very large attendance of former pupils of the Marshland school at a reunion tea and social held in the Marshland Hall on Saturday evening. Mr T. Morton, president of the Former Pupils’ Committee, presided, and welcomed former pupils from far and near, some having come from Oamaru, Southbridge, and Kaikoura. Dancing was enjoyed to music played by the Imperial Dance Band,' extras, being supplied by Miss D. Blackburn and Mrs Marks. Items were given by Miss Noeline Schimanski (highland and skipping dances). Messrs R. Stevens, and Lawrence (humorous items), and F. Fox (bugle calls and trumpet solos). DUNSANDEL RED CROSS * EFFORT The Dunsandel branch of the Red Cross Society held a community sing and auction sale of goods for Red Cross funds and a very satisfactory sum was raised. The leader of the community sing was Mr Buckler assisted by Mr R. Paddy at the piano, and Mr T. Hastings. Mrs Buckler also assisted with songs. Mr Buckler also acted as auctioneer and disposed of a. large amount of goods for good prices. The weekly social at Springston South for the patriotic funds was well attended. Cards winners were Messrs W. Mounce, W. Memory, R. Wall. Stewart’s Band supplied the music. Mr C. J. Woods was master of ceremonies.
