SOUTH CANTERBURY
SEADOWN DRAINAGE DISCUSSION AT PUBLIC MEETING Complaints as to the inadequacy of the Seadown Drainage Scheme were discussed at a pubhc meeting held in the Seadown School on Saturday night, at which more than 36 farmers were present, and represematives of the Levels County Council and the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The chairman (Mr R. M. Sievwright) said that the drainage committee had sent a letter to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) expressing the view that the proposed amount of drainage was inadequate and suggesting that the scheme be extended to include the Horseshoe Lagoon. It was also suggested that sufficient “bleeding” laterals be constructed adequately to drain the country, that men be employed on superficial drains to conduct surface water to the conduit laterals, and that the whole of the financial arrangements be examined to determine what proportion the department should bear in view of the trouble caused and what proportion should be levied on the farmer in view of the asset created. After Mr W. Taylor, of the Public Works Department, had addressed the meeting, stating that the department was doing all it could to cope with farmers’ difficulties and asking for the co-operation of farmers to ensure the ultimate success of the scheme, a vote of confidence in the committe- was carried unanimously and the letter which had been sent to Wellington was approved. On the motion of Mr J. Harris it was decided that farmers of the Seadown area promise the Government their wholehearted support to assist with the war effort. CHURCH PARADE AMBULANCE AND RED CROSS Members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Red Cross to the number of about 200 took part in a parade to St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Sunday, headed by the Timaru Municipal Band, under Lieutenant W. H. Osborne. The Superintendent, Mr J. M. Dunne, was in charge of the brigade, the strength of which was 25 officers and 100 other ranks, and the Commandant, Mrs R. D. King, was in charge of the Red Cross parade, which consisted of three officers and 70 other ranks. An appropriate sermon was preached by the Ven. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan. Geraldine, at Fraser Park No. 1; Zingari v. Waimate. at Fraser Park No. 2; Star v. Makikihi, at Makikihi; Celtic v. Temuka, at Temuka. The Waimate Sub-Union wrote suggesting that third and fourth grade representative teams from South Canterbury play at Waimate on July 6. It was decided to reply expressing regret that -because of the financial position the union was unable to agree to the request. The subunion was’, granted permission to play North' Otago and the Waitaki Sub-Union provided the union had first call on Waimate'. players if required against "Ashburton and North Otago ,on the same days. —Mr T. B. Lane, referee, reported having ordered one Star and one Temuka player off the field in a recent fourth grade match for illegal play. It was agreed that both boys had been sufficiently punished by being ordered off, and that in the circumstances no further action be taken. A Zingari player who had been ordered off in a junior match for striking a Star player was stood down for one playing Saturday. Mr S. H. Sullivan presided. PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE AT GERALDINE DISTRIBUTION OF WOOL FOR KNITTING MITTENS Wool for mittens and scarves will be sent to Geraldine at an early date, according to a report submitted by the chairman - (Mr D. C. McKechnie) at a meeting of the Geraldine Zone Patriotic Committee. It was decided to endeavour to have the wool distributed to the women of the district through the same depot as is used by the Red Cross. The chairman also reported that it was necessary ‘to obtain prior authority for functions and raffles for patriotic purposes, and drew attention to the regulation that the whole of thenet proceeds must be handed to the Patriotic Fund. The meeting recommended that no more licences be granted for functions for the Sick and Wounded appeal until further notice. The chairman reported that national appeals would be cut out in future, and that the organisation of appeals would be handled by the provincial councils to avoid overlapping. It was hoped that various, organisations in the district would help by raising money for patriotic purposes. The meeting decided to recommend that the Canterbury Provincial Council organise definite appeals at definite times for specific purposes, and that a big appeal be launched soon for the fighting forces overseas. Mr W. S. Crotty drew attention to the fact that soldiers in Egypt had been called upon to pay postage on private parcels in some instances.
