TUKF GOSSIP Reminder Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Monday. Jockeys as Hosts The Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association will be able to hand to the Red Cross Fund a handsome amount as the result of aball held in the Riccarton racecourse tea kiosk this week. The whole organisation was in the hands of the local horsemen, headed by the chairman of the branch, A. E. Ellis, and the receipts from the sale of admission tickets were augmented by competitions held in the room for sets of complimentary tickets for the Grand National Steeplechase meeting in August, presented by the Canterbury Jockey Club. A Rider’s Donation At a recent meeting at the Moo nee Valley Racing Club’s course, held for the Commonwealth Government, the well-known jockey, N. Percival, gave his losing fees to the fund. At future meetings held : for patriotic funds Percival will also give his losing ride fees. Good Credentials The English Oaks winner, Godiva, was one of the best two-year-olds in England last season. She won the Princess Royal Stakes at Kempton at her first start, and in the Sandown Park Stud Produce Stakes a fortnight later she was left at the post and took no part in the race. She made amends by winning the Bedford Stakes at Newmarket and the Stud Produce Stakes on the same course. She was also third in the Middle Park Stakes. Earlier this season she won the One Thousand Guineas. Gcdiva was bred by her owner, Mr Esmond Harmsworth. Coming to Riccarton Royal Lancer’s next appearance will "be at, the South. Canterbury _ Hunt meeting, after which he will join A. S. Ellis’s Riccarton team until after the Grand National meeting. The Irish Lancer three-year-old failed in his two anpearances at Wingatui. but track conditions were against him. Teams on Tour Mr W. E. Hazlett sent five of his horses —Frenchy, Noko. Spendthrift. Baltruin, and Colonel French —to Washdyke early this week, and they will be campaigned from this centre at coming meetings. Frenchy, Noko, and Colonel French are to race to-day, and all are in excellent order for their engagements. T. J. Boyle will ride Prenchv and Colonel French. R. McNay intends to take three horses to the Grand National meeting. Two of the number will be Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy. Both raced at the Dunedin meeting, but failed badly in their engagements, but the racing appears to have improved them, especially Spanish Lad. The Balboa gelding's mission is to be the Winter Cup. a race in which he finished fourth last year;, while Nigger Boy will tackle the open sprints. The third member of the team will probably be Gnohill, who beat a novice field in easy fashion at Wingatui. Turaki Over Country It is possible that Turaki, at present at Riccarton, will be nominated for the Wellington Steeplechase next month. Although he has yet to race across country the Balboa gelding has j done a good amount of schooling over the big timber, while this season he has’ qualified behind the Birchwood hounds. His connexions expect him to earn distinction as a steeplechaser, and so far his efforts in private have been more convincing in this department than over hurdles. . Good Prospects Gay Boa is to be sent to Washdyke this week, where he will join E. J. Ellis’s, stable and be sent from there to the Wellington and National meetings. The Balboa gelding has done well since racing at the Wingatui meeting and has excellent prospects ox winning an important steeplechase before the jumping season ends. Like most of the stock of his sire Gay Boa is a proficient jumper, and so far this season the only schooling he has done has been on race days. Successful Dam Direct Hit, the dam of the Otago Steeplechase and Great Western winner, Bally Brit, and also of Shillelagh Wood (second to Nocturnus in the Grand National Steeplechase), is now in her twenty-second year, but she is still being bred from. Three years ago she was purchased by Mr W. E. Hazlett, who has a good type of two-year-old gelding by Salmagundi from her, while last season she was mated with Sir Simper. Direct Hit bears her age well and promises to breed still further. She is a member of one of many successful lines bred by Mr J. .Grigg, of Ashburton. Direct Hit was sired by Fleetham from Lucky Shot, by Calibre from Tapuwai, by Seaton Delaval from Waitemata, by Eiridspord from Aorere, by Chester. Shillelagh Wood proved herself in the little racing she did, and some interest will be taken in her career at the stud. Last season she was mated with Siegfried. When first raced. Bally Brit lacked stamina, but this has been one of his strong points in his efforts this term, and he may win another good race before the jumping season ends. IVletropolitan Trotting Club held 14 meetings and at each one Mr G. W.-C. Smithson and Mr A. A. Penfold were present. Messrs F. E. Graham, D. F. Glanville, T H Ker, and C. S. Thomas each attended 13 meetings, while Messrs A. L. Matson and G. L. Rutherford were at 12 meetings. Healthy Competition Since the death of Mr J. H. Williams. who had been president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club for many years, no member has been elected to the position of president, the duties being performed by, Mr F. E. Graham, the vice-president. It is understood that Mr Graham will this year stand for the position of president, and will be opposed by Mr A. L. Matson, a former president of the Canterbury Owners’ and Trainers’ Association, and in recent years a member of the committee of the Metropolitan Trotting Club. There will be several other elections this year, and the Hon. W. Hayward, M.L.C., for many years a steward of the club, will be opposed by Mr C. S. -Thomas for the position of vice-president. There are five nominations for three vacancies On the committee, and contesting these positions will be Messrs W. G. Brass, J. Rainier, D. McFarlane, C. E. Hoy, and the retiring member, Mr F. W. Johnston, who will offer himself for re-election. Messrs. W. E. Simes and W. S. Mitchell are new candidates for positions as stewards. The contests for the different positions shows a keenness in the club’s affairs that has not, been manifest for some time, and the 'greatest interest is being shown in the elections. The meeting will be held on July 3. Metropolitan Club’s Programme A feature of the programme, presented by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, is the provision for horses “assessed at” and not .“for horses that can do” the different times. This is a move in the right direction and will debar horses from racing out of their classes. While it may inflict a hardship on some owners who are prepared to concede one or two seconds to be in a race, the provision is a wise one. A programme cannot be compiled to suit each performer, and if owners are prepared to give away time to be in a race, then the selfmade assessment should operate in future races. Novices Guy Azaleas, engaged in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton to-day, is an aged gelding by Adioo Guy from Azaleas, and is trained by T. H. Gunning at Oaxnaru. When raced in Southland, Guy Azaleas was credited with the possession of a good burst of speed, and one likely to develop into a class performer. Other horses riot well known to the public engaged in this race include Marco Polo, a three-year-old colt by Jack Potts—Harold Dillon mare, owned and trained by M. C. McTigue; Clonard, a three-year-old gelding by Jack Potts —Early Harvester mare (L. A. Maidens); Hamarfast, 4yrs, by Wrack—Highland Princess (C. Nordquist); Cockney, 4yrs, by Wrack—Pearlie Chimes (J. Behrns);

and Hardy Oak, 3yrs, by Nelson Derby —Queen’s Own (B. Grice). An Ashburton Prospect Braw Lass, a chestnut filly by Wrack Fanny Huon, trained at Dunedin by J. Behrns, has only started twice this season, her second appearance being at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting in April, when she won the Weston Trot Handicap of a mile and a half in 3min 21 2-ssec, Tokalon and Irish Dusk filling ‘‘the places. Braw Lass started several times last season, her most notable performance being a close second to Special Edition in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at the Ashburton meeting held at Addington. Amongst those that finished behind her were Coquette, Honestus, Aidershot, Shadow Son, and Busted Flush. Braw Lass will have her followers in to-day’s" engagement;
