RAILWAY OPERATING COMPANIES
ENLISTMENTS TO CLOSE TO-DAY (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 20. The Minister for Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) said to-day that he was very pleased with the splendid response being made by railwaymen to the call for enlistments in the two railway operating companies ‘ being formed for service overseas. He said that the total number of fit men urgently required for these companies was 742, including 108 engine-drivers, 108 firemen, and 220 guards, shunters, and porters. Betore the issue of the present appeal the total number of railywaymen who had been released for military service was 1155. In making a special appeal to railwaymen to join up, Mr Sullivan said it was necessary that applications for enlistment in these companies should close to-morrow. He especially appealed to engine-drivers and firemen, whose offers of service were most urgently needed.
