Miss C. Pyne (Naseby street), who has been in England for some time, is returning to the Dominion. Sliss Pat Jarrett, a Melbourne journalist, who went to the United States at the beginning of March, has been appointed private secretary to Mrs R. G. Casey, wife of the Australian Minister at Washington.

The Mayoress of Kaiapoi. Mrs W. H. A. Vickery, is in Wellington attending the Lady Galway refugee fund conference.

Mrs William Trolove (The Shades. Marlborough) is visiting Christchurch and is staying at Warwick House. Mrs G. M. Broughton (Invercargill), who is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Leversedge, Fendalton, will return home at the end of the week.

Mrs D. Smeaton (Dunedin), who has been visiting Mrs C. Hudson, Timaru, has returned home.

Miss Marjorie Tait, who has been sports secretary at the New Plymouth High School, is spending a holiday m Wellington before returning to her home in Timaru.

Mrs R. Wynne-Owen welcomed members of the Christchurch Welsh Society and their friends to a “women’s evening” held in the society’s rooms m Stewart Dawson’s building. The programme included items by the Welsh choir, solos, recitations, orchestral items, and amusing sketches. Those taking part were Mesdames Greenwood, W. Moorcraft, Green, W. Lloyd, C. Hook, D. James, O. Jones, Barker, Tyler, H. Williams, Loder, Poole, W. Evans, Wynne-Owen, Misses V. Jones, C. Taylor, Freebury, Cox, B. Griffiths, M. Williams. M. Thomas, and Gill. A competition arranged by Mr and Mrs Tyler was won by Mrs Wynne-Owen.

The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully > acknowledges generous offers of help for a needy family ol eight children whose father has recently been in hospital for some weeks and on whose behalf she appealed yesterday for a bed. Offers have been received from Mrs Keddy, Mrs Jopp, Mrs Caverhill (Christchurch), and Mrs J. Palmer (Hornby), to all of whom the lady editor is grateful.

At the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson, who presided, referred to the great loss the society had sustained by the recent death of Mrs u. Chilton, who had been a foundation member of the branch. Her wise counsel and cheery personality would, Mrs Wilson said, be greatly missed by every member of the branch, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mrs Chilton s memory. Later a letter from the Public Trustee was read, advising that Mrs Chilton had bequeathed £IOO to the society, to be used for the general purposes of the Christchurch Karitane Hospital.

In response to a girl guide Empire appeal to buy two air ambulances and a motor lifeboat costing £20,000. the New Zealand guides raised £895 by voluntary subscription during . the week June 1 to 8. As the response has been so good, the New Zealand headquarters is subscribing £ 105 towards the exchange, so that £BOO sterling can be paid over to girl guide headquarters in London. The appeal was lor £250 from New Zealand, and it was hoped that this amount might be slightly exceeded. But not even the most sanguine members of the girl guide movement expected such a very generous response. The appeal closed in England on June 14.

At the last meeting of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of the Young Women’s Christian Association Miss Thiele presided, and Mrs dc Muth, Wellington, brought greetings from the club in Wellington. The speaker for the evening was Mrs L. G. Pocock, who reviewed the present situation in France. General discussion ensued, and Miss Moss thanked Mrs Pocock for her address.

At the June meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunkot Society, leave of absence was granted to Nurse T. McMillan, who had enlisted and been accepted for active service. The resignation from the committee of Mrs O. T. J. Alpers, who has left for England, was accepted with great regret. Mrs Algar Williams and Mrs W. G. Scannell were appointed to the executive committee. Mrs J. Frogley (Hornby), Mrs R. E. Hudson (LincolnTai Tapu), and Mrs W.
