his real quality. His owner-trainer, Mr L. G. Paul, has not made any definite plans as to another trip across the Tasman, but Vill be guided by circumstances, principally weight considerations.

Famous Livery Vascones, by Gascony, who has recently won three races in a row on the Hawke’s Bay circuit, including the open sprint at Hastings last Saturday, carries the famous Stead livery of yellow and black cap. She was acquired a short while back by Messrs A. G. and W. R. Stead, sons of the late Mir W. G. Stead, mainly with the idea of putting her to the stud, but after her excellent late form she is likely to be kept in racing for the present. She is the first horse raced by her new owners. Padishah

It was not expected that Padishah would be able to run prominently in spring events at Hastings, but the dual Grand National winner never looked better, and is in great order for any jumping engagement his owner-trainer may have in mind, says a northern correspondent. Padishah is not a good horse in heavy ground, and if it is intended to race him in New Zealand, Trentham going jn the winter may -not be considered favourable enough for him.

A Remote Possibility If a horse falls in a flat race, then about a million to one chance exists that any share of the stakes will be gained in the event of it being! caught and remounted. Nevertheless, a remit to the Racing Conference reads, “Every horse , starting in a flat race shall carry the weight he has been handicapped to carry, subject to any alterations by declared overweight, penalty, allowance, or otherwise, as provided by the rules, over the whole distance fixed .for the race, and in all flat races he shall be ridden throughout the race only by the jockey officially recorded and recognised as his rider.” Also, “If a jockey shall dismount or be thrown during the running of a flat race, then he may be assisted in catching his horse and remounting, and, having remounted, he shall then ride behind that place where he dismounted or was thrown before proceeding to continue the race.”

TROTTING NOTES

Patriotic Meeting: Final arrangements for the patriotic meeting to be held at Washdyke on June 29 were made at a meeting of the committee of the Timaru Trotting Club, over which Mr E. Macdonald presided. It was advised that a special train would leave Timaru in the morning for the racecourse and depart from the course in the afternoon, both trains connecting with the north and south expresses. Admission was fixed at 2s 6d for men and women, cars free.

Control of Washdyke At a meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club a motion was carried that the racecourse trustees consider a proposal that their records for upkeepi and control of the racecourse should be kept for them as trustees, and apart from the South Canterbury Jockey Club, and that they make levies on the three club., concerned for their outgoings on a basis of totalisator turnover. Trotting at Ashburton

There were few defections from the original list of nominations when acceptances were declared for 'the two trotting events at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s' meeting to be held on Saturday. Both races should provide keen contests, for included are many young and promising pacers.’ In the Lyndhurst Handicap the best prospects appear to be held by Mervyn Derby, Lady Denise, and Pleasant Guy.

Winchmore Handicap The Winchmore Trot Handicap field is comprised of improving pacers, and the places may be filled by Mortlake, Arietta, and Jack Spratt. In this event Walnoni Jack is giving away five seconds on his assessment to be in the race, but he has again been nominated for the maiden race at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting.

Cloverdalc Cloverdale was third in each of his races at Ngaruawahia, and this form, following on his fourth in the Mangere Handicap at Epsom last month, suggests that the fashionably-bred American horse is at last acquiring solidity. Cloverdale, who is by Abbedale (2min IJsec) from Fanny Direct (2min 7isec), by Braden Direct (2min lisec), was recently sold by Messrs E. G. and F. A. Bridgens to Messrs A. Ebbett and J. R. Henderson, of Hamilton.

Delegates to Conference Mr E. Macdonald will represent the Timaru Trotting Club at the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Mr W. A. Piddington has been nominated for a seat on the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association. Mr B. J. McKenna will represent the New Brighton Trotting Club at the conference next month. Red Pigeon Dead The death is reported from Oamaru of the well-performed Red Pigeon, a daughter of Adioo Guy and Wild Pigeon. She recently joined T. H. Gunning’s stable, and was doing light work with a view to racing early in the new season. OTAKI MAORI R.C. ACCEPTANCES (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) OTAKI. June 19.
