ADDINGTON MARKET

Smaller. Fat Stock Entries

STORE SHEEP The store sheep entrx' was about the same size as last week’s, about 800 head, with little of quality in the offering. There was a bigger proportion of hoggets, but these were well out of condition and made to 14s 7d, with medium sorts 8s 9d to 10s and rough from about ss. Tire feature of the sale was a two-truck lot of attractive four, six, and eight-tooth Romney cross ewes from the Peninsula, which brought 21s 7d to 22s 9d. A small lot of halfbred ewes made 19s Id. and a medium lot of two-tooths went at 12s. The best of the young wethers realised 15s 6d. For the few better pens there was a slightly freer demand. FAT LAMBS The last export sale of the season saw exporters actively in the fat lamb sale, taking a big proportion of the yarding at schedule and slightly more. Quality was very indifferent for the most part, with a bigger proportion of light lambs, and as a result butchers were short of their requirements. This section produced advanced prices for the few choice pens, and altogether the sale was a distinct improve-

KEEN FAT SHEEP SALE Substantially smaller entries caused a hardening in prices in the principal sections of stock at yesterday’s weekly market. Fat sheep advanced by about 3s a head for prime ewes and 2s 6d for the best of the wethers, with other classes from par to slightly better. A smaller entry of fat cattle met with a brisker market by 20s a head for prime steers and from 10s to 15s for most of the others. The sale was the final of the season for export buying, and there was a keen sale of fat lambs as a result. Store sheep were a shade better for the few pens of good ewes. Vealers, dairy cattle, and store pigs were in brisker demand, but there was a. lifeless market for store cattle.

FAT SHEEP The fat sheep penning showed a substantial decline on that of a week ago. approximating 5000 head, as against 7oOU. Quality showed a slight improvement. From the outset there was a keen market, with values for good wethers and ewes up by from Is 6d to 2s 6d on the rates of the previous week. These advances were increased as the sale progressed, and butchers’ ewes were better by 3s a head ana wethers by 2s 6d. There were few medium wethers forward, but these also recorded an advance. Exporters competed spirn> edly for lighter ewes and paid full schedule rates, the strong competition doubtless being due to the fact that the sale was the last of the* season? for export. An outstanding truck lot was forward from T. B. Garrick (Pleasant Point), these selling at the good price of 40s lOd to 44s lOd for the 58. FAT CATTLE The yarding was the smallest for some tifne. comprising 472 head as against 587 last week. The smaller entry gave the market an opportunity of steadying from the tendency of recent sales. Yesterday all classes except perhaps half fattened steers showed an improvement. The minor advance of last week for the best of the beef was strengthened, good steers selling at up to 20s a head better, with medium to good cows averaging up to 15s firmer, and inferior cows, which were practically unsaleable last week, about 10s stronger. Quality generally had little to commend it. A small proportion of the penning was good, and some of it made in the vicinity of 40s per 1001b. VEALERS The vealer market, in which the entxy was substantially smaller than that of a week ago, was brighter, particularly for good vealers. STORE CATTLE There was a much better selection of straight-bred lines penned at yesterday s market, mostly from North Canterbury stations, but there was a slack demand for them and prices were disappointing. A line of 15 2i-year steers from Mount White made £7 Is. ' A line of 114 black poll. Hereford, and crosses from St. James Station were the main attraction. A pen of 25 black-poll yearling steers sold at £2 18s Gd, 28 Hereford cows at £2 18s Gd to £3 Is, and 12 younger at £2 16s. 16 blackpoll cows at £3 Is, 18 black-poll-Hero-ford cross heifer calves at 41s, and lo Hereford steer calves at £2 18s 6d. DAIRY COWS ■ There was a smaller yarding in the dairy section, but a few good sorts were included. There was a brighter demand, with an Improvement in values for cows near or at profit. There Is a prbspept of an acute shortage of milk, and anything meeting the needs of dairymen was in demand. ’ Good heifers made from £9 to £lO 10s, and small up to £7. Good second. third, and fourth calvers sold at from £lO to £l3 15s,'two exceptionally good cows making £ls IQs and £l7 15s. dlum springers sold at £7 to £9. FAT PIGS Porkers at the outset were in ample supply, and later entries constituted a surplus. Prices at the commencement were fully up to those of last week, but over the latter half of the sale values eased from 3s to 5s a head. Choppers were forward in small numbers, and the sale was a good one throughout, values being up to 10s a head in vendors’ favour. Baconers were again forward in small numbers and the demand was keen throughout, values being fully firm at last week's rates. Values were:— Choppers, £3 Is to £7 18s Gd. STORE PIGS There was a medium entry in the store pig section, and except for an occasional pen or two of rough sorts the quality was of a high standard. Competition from the start was keen, and prices advanced on last week's rates by at least 2s a head. Quality weaners were in extremely keen demand and realised the best prices so far this season, making up to 20s. Large stores were penned in small numbers, and these met with an exceptional sale, one pen making to 41s, a price far in excess of pork values. Towards the end of the sale, however, prices eased a little to a parity with those of a week ago. Values were:— Small weaners, 10s to 13s; medium, 14s to 16s; best, to 20s. Slips, 18s to 225.
