MOSCOW RADIO BROADCAST

“A Certain Nation” Warned TENSION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 10, 0 p.m.) LONDON. June 10. The Moscow radio yesterday , stated: “A certain nation, profiting from the international situation, would like to extend its power in the Mediterranean by taking territory from small nations. This nation should remember that some small nations have powerful friends. We are ready at any moment to prevent such moves from whatever direction they come.” While there Is no clear Indication of Italian intentions, hints and rumour continue to come in from various sources. Signor Ansaldo, editor of Count Ciano’s newspaper “Telegrafo,” In his weekly broadcast to the troops, made the completely misleading statement that Britain had abandoned France to her fate. This is belied by the fact that British troops and the Royal Air Force are again fighting side by side with their French comrades. Signor Ansaldo said that the French would not be able to resist for long. Then would come the second phase, an attack on England. This second phase would see Italy at her post. The appointment of Marshal de Bono to command the Army of the South was described by Signor Ansaldo as significant. The army was composed of veterans and they would probably be the advance guard in the new struggle. The Cairo correspondent of “The Times” says that many Italians are going home from. Egypt, and businessmen are leaving unobtrusively after liquidating their interests. The Cairo correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that for the last two months many Italian ships have been going home from Massawa through the Suez Canal carrying cargoes of lorries. The Egyptian Home Defence Department has ordered 1,800,000 gas masks from Britain. The last touches have been made to the Vatican City’s preparations for war. The British Legation has accepted the Pope’s offer of hospitality for foreign diplomats who are unable to live outside the Vatican City in the event of Italy entering the conflict. The Rome radio announced that a British warship intercepted the Italian liner Vulcania homeward bound with repatriated Italians and escorted her to Gibraltar, In Malta, the Trades Union Council has denounced a speech by a former Italian Minister, who claimed that Malta was for Italy. The speech was described as a libel on the Maltese nation, and particularly on Maltese labour and comrades-in-arms in the. forces. - Signor Mussolini has < received a second report on contraband control. It will be remembered that negotiations between Great Britain and Italy were previously broken off after an agreement believed to be satisfactory to Italy was reached. In view of the complete absence of reference to Italy’s refusal to continue negotiations on the question arising from the blockade, a solution of which was thought to have been reached, it is doubted in London if the complaints by Dr. Gayda In the “Voce dTtalia” are seriously advanced, states a British Official Wireless message. Dr. Gayda’s statement that “Italy’s most conciliatory proposals for more reasonable treatment were not taken into account,” is a flat contradiction of the facts. The Italian Government’s complaints were the subject of discussion between British and Italian experts and after the visit to Rome of Sir Wilfred Greene it was confidently believed from the British side that an agreement had been reached. This belief was destroyed by Italy’s repudiation of the agreement which was reached between the experts.
