Heavy Onslaughts Made In Centre

FRENCH CHECK GERMAN THRUST IN EAST (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 11, 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 10.' The French day communique Is very brief. It states: “The battle from the sea to the Argonne continues more and more violent.” The latest information reaching London of the military position on the French front relates to the situation as it had developed yesterday. It appears that although the attack along the front from the sea to the Argonne was intense, especially violent onslaughts have been made south of Amiens and on the plateau south of Soissons. In the Amiens sector the intensity of the attack, in spite of heavy losses inflicted on the enemy, caused the withdrawal of the Allied lines towards the south of Breteuil. In the Soissons area the enemy is said to be using from 10 to 15 divisions, and in the early morning developed a violent assault in the Tardenois district. This was preceded by a heavy bombardment. On the remainder of the front the enemy does not seem to have made any real progress. The situation thus disclosed can only be regarded as grave, and it can be said to be obvious that the enemy is throwing immense resources into the battle. \ The Germans’ most violent attack was in the Champagne sector, but the French lines there are still holding. The Germans also launched fierce onslaughts in the region southward of Aumale and Montdidier, which form the centre of the front. • A series of extremely severe attacks and counter-attacks developed in the region of Soissons.
