NEW BY-LAW FOR CITY

Gyratory System Now Compulsory TOUTING AT CEMETERIES PROHIBITED A provision compelling adherence to the gyratory traffic System in Cathedral square is contained in No. 25 by-law, approved by the Christchurch City Council last evening at a special meeting. Tramway vehicles are exempt. The specific wording of the provision follows; “A person riding or driving any animal or vehicle, other than a tramcar, tramway trailer, or tramway in Cathedral square, shall conform to the directional flow of traffic .... known as the Cathedral square gyratory system, except in the case of vehicles in so far as is impracticable in entering or leaving authorised parking areas.” •There was some objection among councillors last evening to the provision of exemption for tramway omnibuses. An amendment moved by Cr; E. H. Andrews, aiming at the deletion of the exemption, was supported by Cr. M. E. Lyons and Cr. A. C. Sandston, but was lost on a division. Control of Dogs The new by-law also provides for the control of dogs in shopping areas. Continuous control by an effective lead or other contrivance must be exercised over any dog taken or allowed into the principal shopping areas of the city and suburbs, including the central shopping area, the Victoria street area, the shops at Papanui road on the Bealey avenue and Office road intersections, Colombo street shopping areas such as those at Bealey avenue, and similar areas in many other city streets. Another section of the new by-law prohibits touting for orders or custom in city cemeteries and preventing persons making disparaging statements in cemeteries about any sculptor or monumental mason or any tombstone or monumental work in the cemetery, for the purpose of soliciting work. Itinerant photographers are also prevented from attending furterals in a cemetery without a special permit. Existing by-laws are amended to provide for the burial of the ashes of cremated remains.
