RANGIORA PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES That there would be no further efforts for the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund after June 15 was stated by the chairman of the Rangiora Patriotic Committee (Mr C. W. Tyler) at a meeting of the executive in Rangiora yesterday afternoon, when the activities of the various sub-com-mittees set up recently were reviewed. Mr Tyler said that funds collected after that date would go to the provincial patriotic fund pending the commencement of another appeal. It was stated that so far £llOO had been collected for the Sick, Wounded, and Distress Fund in the Rangiora district. Reports of the work of the appeal, entertainment, local fund, and parcels sub-committees were presented by Messrs W. C. Prosser, E. D. R. Smith, G. M. Morgan, and C. J. Smith, respective chairmen. Mr A. S. Louisson, secretary of the entertainment committee, reported that some difficulty was being experienced in obtaining names for the official record of men leaving the district for active service. He urged all who knew of men going overseas to forward the names for record. Besides the arrangements for public farewells to men. Mr E. D. R. Smith said that it was important that any farewells in smaller centres of the district should not be considered to take the place of the central functions in Rangiora. Mr L. M. Best was appointed a member of the local funds sub-committee. MALVERN ELECTRIC POWER BOARD ANNUAL ACCOUNTS AND ESTIMATES Mr John Deans presided over a full attendance of members at the last monthly meeting of the Malvern Electric Power Board. At the close of the monthly meeting the annual meeting of the board was held. The annual statements disclosed a small surplus of £64, after bringing into account £1730 as the net proceeds for rates levied for the year. The income and expenditure account showed a gross profit from the resale of electricity and from the showroom and wiring department of £2683, but interest and sinking fund instalment charges amounted to £4,332. The chairman in his annual report stated that the loan indebtedness had been reduced by £IOOO, the amount paid off under the conversion scheme. The reticulation system and plant showed an increase of £1368, most of which was accounted for by the replacement of the old gum poles by ironbark; extensions and new construction and some small additions to the working plant made up the balance. Hardwood poles erected during the year were 462, and the proportion of them in the system was now 87 per cent., so that given favourable conditions it should be possible within the next 12 months to complete this work. This would enable the board considerably to reduce expenditure on repairs and maintenance, and it was hoped to pass on some of this saving to the ratepayers. Sales of current for the year showed the same proportionate increase, about 3J per cent., as last year. It was satisfactory to note that outstanding accounts showed a substantial reduction from £lOBl to £715. Mr Deans submitted the following estimates;— Receipts, £11,440 (deficit £254); expenditure. £11,440. Mr Deans was re-elected chairman. SOCIAL AT SPRINGFIELD There was a record attendance at the weekly 500 cards tournament, held for Red Cross funds. Prizes were won by Mrs R. J. Innes, Mrs Smith, Mr Smith, and Mr J. Nimmo. Up to date the fund will benefit to the extent of nearly £lO. A bring-afid-buy will be held for the same purpose on Thursdays
