RETURN FROM WHEAT

PROVINCE’S SHARE OF CHEQUE AVERAGE YIELD SO FAR IS 30.8 BUSHELS The amount of wheat handled by the Wheat Committee up to yesterday was 5,690,000 bushels. Of that total, 4,791,968 bushels were produced in Canterbury and the value of this, at 5s 9d a bushel f.o.b. was £1,428,050. This return from wheat makes an interesting comparison with the province’s wool cheque, which was announced last week as £ 1,455,330. There is a sale of crutchings to be held in August, but the cheque from that will probably not be sufficient to lift the total to £1,500,000. The wheat, on the other hand, has not yet ail been accounted for, and when it is, the value of Canterbury’s production will probably be nearly £2,000,000. The average yield of the crop so far handled by the Wheat Committee works out at 30.8 bushels an acre.
