AUCKLAND WEST SEAT
LABOUR CANDIDATE CHOSEN MR P. CARR, PRESIDENT OF TRAMWAY UNION 'PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, April 25. The selection of Mr P. Carr as the official Labour Party candidate to contest the by-election for the Auckland West seat in the House of Representatives made vacant by the death of Mr Savage was announced at a meeting of members of the Auckland West branch of the Labour Party and affiliated trades unions living in the electorate held on Wednesday night. The meeting was not open to the press, but the Hon. D. Wilson, M.L.C., said the announcement had been enthusiastically received. He said that there had been 12 nominees for the position, and that the nine who attended the meeting promised Mr Carr their whole-hearted support. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That this meeting of Labour Party members resident in the Auckland West electorate pledges its whole-hearted support to the selected candidate, Mr Carr, and pledges itself to do everything possible to secure his return at the head of the poll on May IS.” A tramway motorman in the employ of the Auckland Transport Board, Mr Carr is a member of the Auckland City Council, and has been president of the Auckland Tramway Union for 10 years. He was born at Papakura in 1884.
