BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS SEVEN RECORDS BROKEN NEW EMPIRE TIME FOR MILE WALK There were large fields at the Christchurch Boys’ High School’s annual sports meeting, which was held at the school grounds on Wednesday, and the events were keenly contested. The day was beautifully fine, with very little wind, and the track was in good condition. In all, seven records were broken and a number were equalled. The outstanding event was the recordbreaking effort of R. C. Brown in the mile walk. Walking with amazing speed and ease he covered the distance in 7mln 6 3-6 sec, breaking by 11 4-ssec his own record set up last year, of 7mln 18 2-ssec, and establishing a new British Empire schoolboys’ record. The previous Empire schoolboys’ record of 7min 17 3-ssec, was set up in England in 1934. Brown’s fastest time is 6mln 58sec, made at the recent Dominion athletic meeting in Wellington. He has also won the New Zealand junior mile walk championship and the Canterbury championship. Also praiseworthy was the effort of R. K Mason in the intermediate long jump. He jumped 20ft 03in to break the previous record by nearly a foot. R. E. L. Thomson set records In the Junior 220 yards and the junior 440 yards with times of 24 4-ssec and 57 3-ssec respectively. J. McMaster and F. L. Tucker both beat the existing record of 18 3-ssec in the Intermediate 120 yards hurdles. In a trial run R. W. Flatman broke the senior 120 yards hurdles record by two-fifths of a second with a time of 15 2-ssec. and the senior-champion, W. R Wilkinson, who is qualified to run . in the intermediate grade, broke his last year's record of 2min 14 2-ssec in the intermediate half-mile with ihe exceptional time of 2min lOsec Wilkinson won the senior chamnionship with a total of 19 points. Though he is only 16 years of age. he has shown nlienomenal speed and staying power. The intermediate rap went to R. S. Thomson, and R E. L. Thomson took the junior championship for the second year in succession. , . After the sports, trophies were presented in the assembly hall by Miss Ethne Lancaster, daughter of the headmaster.
