LIVING ON SUSTENANCE
TO CHE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, —I see by “The Press” that the Hon. P. C. Webb is in Christchurch. I should like to ventilate the plight of the families of men who through illhealth can only do light work. There is no light work. My husband reports at the Labour Bureau week after week and is always told the same thing, "No ligh work offering.” I ask the public generally; how can any person maintain a home on sustenance pay? Is there no hope of any better conditions? The country needs men! Surely there are jobs in the various military camps that could be Satisfactorily filled by men over -50 and let the younger men away. I read in “The Press” that the Hon. P. C. Webb is always saying that something should be done for these men, but nothing ever happens. For the last few months I have struggled to keep going, but the ever-increasing cost of living makes the task impossible. I am sure I voice the opinion of many others in the same position, and would like to see others take this matter up. Meanwhile I sign myself.—Yours, etc., DESPERATE. April 21, 1940.
