HANGIOHA NOTES RECITALS BY PAUL SCHRAMM Paul Schramm, the well-known pianist, gave a recital in Rangiora last evening. His programme was a varied one, and added interest was given by the brief references to composers and to aspects of the works with which he interspersed his numbers. Mr Schramm’s visit was arranged by the Rangiora Musical Society, and he was entertained to supper by the society after the recital. The president (Mr F. T. Ager) introduced Mr Schramm and the pianist was thanked by the Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler). Mr Schramm visited primary and secondary schools in Rangiora and the surrounding ■ district during the day, and played for the pupils. Inspectors’ Report “The inspectors’ report on the general work and discipline of the school was most satisfactory and reflects credit on the headmaster (Mr J. O. Webber) and staff,” said the retiring chairman (Mr C. J. Smith) in presenting the committee’s report at the meeting of householders of the Rangiora District School last evening. Mr A. Fowke had joined the staff as an assistant to take the place of Mr E. J. N. Rice, who was transferred to Kaiapoi. Anglican Parish Boundaries The Anglican parish boundaries in the Rangiora district have been under consideration for some little time, and a special conference has been called this evening- to discuss the matter. Archdeacon A. C. Purchas, Archdeacon of Rangiora and Westland, will meet representatives of the Rangiora district," Loburn, Sefton, Ashley, and Woodend, in Rangiora. ’ Public Cemetery To discuss the laying-out of an area at the south-western corner of Maria Andrews Park as a public cemetery for Rangiora, members of the Rangiora Borough and County Councils will meet there this morning. About five acres has been made available for immediate use, and tree stumps haye been removed preparatory to the planning of plots. Burnham Hut Appeal An appeal for funds for the Church Army hut at Burnham Military Camp was made throughout the Christchurch diocese on Sunday. The amount collected in Rangiora was about £2O.

PERSONAL NOTES RANGIORA Mr and, Mrs R. H,Bailey (“Home Creek,” Loburn) are spending a holiday in Wellington. Mr G. G. Fahey (Dannevirke) is visiting Rangiora. FAREWELL TO KAIKOURA SCHOOLMASTER MR D. MANSON TRANSFERRED TO LYTTELTON More than 300 people were present at the Kaikoura Drill Hall a: a farewell function in honour of Mr and Mrs D. Manson, who are o take up their residence in Christchurch as a result of Mr Manson’s transfer from the Mangamaunu School to the Lyttelton School. In presenting Mr and Mrs Manson with a silver teapot and hot water jug for the Kaikoura branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, the president (Mr F. Smith) referred to Mr Manson’s scholastic ability and wished them both success in the future. Among the apologies for absence rferid at the gathering was one from the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple). In presenting Mr Manson with a cheque, Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., paid a tribute to Mr Manson’s service at the Mangamaunu School. Other speakers were Mr H. E. Combs, M.P., Mr J. J. Mackle, chairman of the Mangamaunu School Committee, Mr G. W. Armitage, chairman of the Canterbury Education Board, arid Messrs H. Jacobs, S. Baird, and H. J. Bignell. Mr Manson replied briefly in acknowledgement, and expressed thanks for the way in which the. parents and children had stood by him during his tenure of the position. He trusted that his successor would receive similar good treatment. CHEVIOT YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB The annual meeting of the Cheviot Young Farmers’ Club was held recently. .Mr H. Stevens presided over a good attendance. The following officers were elected: President, Mr H. Stevens; advisory president, Mr R. Anderson; secretary, Mr R. Winskill; treasurer, Mr G. Harrison. During the evening Mr T. Stevenson, jun., made a presentation to Mr J. McLean, who had been a very keen member of the club, and who is leaving the district to live in Sheffield. AMURI YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB At the annual meeting of the Amuri Young Farmers’ Club a credit balance of £ll was reported for the year. The following officers w<" e elected:— Advisory president, Mr A. C. RANGIORA SCHOOL COMMITTEE RESOLUTION BY MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS Householders of the Rangiora District School decided last evening that until householders of the district had had full opportunity to discuss the proposal to establish an intermediate school this should not be proceeded with, particularly because of the financial responsibility involved. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided. An average roll for the year oi 329, enabling the school to retain its 5D grade, was mentioned in the annual report of the retiring chairman (Mr C. J. Smith). The present roll was 317. The report commented on the excellent order of the grourids and buildings. Credit balances of £36 9s 9d and £37 4s Id in the general and special accounts respectively were shown in the financial statement, compared with £lB 14s Id and £3l 19s 6d last year. It was stated that £l7 6s 9d was set aside for special equipment, having been raised at the bring-and-buy fair, and that there was an outstanding account of £l3 8s 6d due to the dental clinic. There were 10 nominations for the committee of nine members, and the following were elected:—Messrs W. K. Nicholson (chairman), G. W. Watson, G. C. Ironside (secretary), O. Alford, D. A. Ruston, J. C. Hargreaves, E. C. Horsley, L. D. Hawkins, and D. G. Sutherland (treasurer). Messrs Watson and Hargreaves were appointed representatives on the dental clinic committee, and MessrsHorsley and Alford for the School Committees’ Association. KAIAPOI A motion instructing the incoming committee to inform the Canterbury Education Board that the meeting was opposed to the establishment of an intermediate school at Rangiora, because it considered that if would make too long a day for children of 11 and 12 years, was passed at the annual meeting of householders of the Kaiapoi Borough School district last evening. There was an attendance of about 30 householders. The following committee was elected:—Mrs M. Greenwood, Messrs F, Bryden (secretary), S. T. Raymond (chairman), W. G. Wylie, E. T. Shore, H. J. Mclntosh, O. M. Williams, T. C. Cross, the Rev. N. J. Stevenson. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING CHEVIOT CLUB The Cheviot Miniature Rifle Club held the first shoot of the season recently. Jordan); Irwell a bye. NORTH CANTERBURY SUB-UNION SENIOR COMPETITION TO BEGIN ON MAY 11 The senior competition of the North Canterbury Hugby FootbaU Sub-Union will begin on May 11. Entries from the North Canterbury, Cust, Ohoka, Amberley, Glenmark, and Woodend clubs were received at a meeting of delegates in Rangiora last evening. The president (Mr W. H. Candy) presided. Three junior teams (North Canterbury, Oxford, and Woodend). with . the possibility of a fourth from Cust, were also entered, but no date was fixed for the beginning of play in this grade. It was decided that no trophies should be played for during the war. A further resolution stated that players of clubs not affiliated during the war could play for any other club by permission of the sub-union. , The following referees’ committee was appointed:—Messrs A. G. Hunnlbell, J. V. Rowland, and L. X. Hawkins. The arrangement of the draw was left to the chairman. GOLF RANGIORA LADIES’ CLUB Members of the Rangiora Ladies’ Golf Club played their monthly medal match during the week-end. The winner was Mrs R. J. Hegan, who returned a card of 100, 24—76. The next best score was that of Mrs W. C. Keetley, 96, 18—78, AMURI CLUB The Amur! Golf Club opened its season on the course at Waiau with a Canadian foursomes flag match, the winners being Mrs G. W. Todd and J. Gibb. Mr L. H. Davison, club captain, welcomed visitors from the Culverden Club, for whom Mr D. Davison replied.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION WAIMAIRI-PAPANUI Mrs Moncrief presided at the annual meeting of the Waimairi-Papanui branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Prime Minister. Results of competitions were;— Flowers, Mrs Greig 1, Mrs Reynolds 2; single bloom, Miss Cadenhead 1, Mrs Reynolds 2; brown scones, Mrs Reynolds 1, Miss Cadenhead 2; “white elephant,” Miss Cadenhead. Mrs Reynolds won the prize for most points in flower competitions during the year, with Mrs Cawood second. Officers elected were:—President. Mrs Moncrief; vice-presidents, Miss Cadenhead and Mrs C. Burrows; committee, Mesdames Taylor, Radford, Cawood, and L. Stevens; advisory member, Mrs Reynolds; delegates, Mesdames Moncrief and Reynolds. SOUTHBROOK-FLAXTON Presentations of trophies for the most points gained during the year were made by Mrs C. Mclntosh, who presided at the annual meeting of the S. uthbrook-Flaxton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at Southbrook recently. Mrs S. Atkinson received the Dickhoff cup and Mrs A. Mclntosh, jun., was presented with a “lucky” cup. Hostesses were Mesdames Brady, Cowens, Hall, Shuttleworth, and Fahey. Deans vice-president of the New Zealand Federation, gave an address on the work of the institutes and their activities for the soldiers. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs W. J. Harrison. Mrs G. Chapman conducted the social half-hour ana a competition was won by Mrs G. D. Marsh. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs G. D. Marsh; vice-president, Mrs L. A.
