MEMORIAL TO MR P. MENZIES

■ ♦ TABLET UNVEILED AT OLD SCHOOL A tablet in memory of Mr Peter Menzies was. unveiled at the Christchurch West High School on Saturday mornibg. The tablet recorded that Mr Menzies served the school well and faithfully for 36 years. He died last October, after 16 years of retirement. “Mr Menzies gave practically the whole of his life to this school,” said the headmaster (Mr A. E. Gaddjck). Except for one year, 1891, when he was at the Normal School, he spent the whole of his teaching career at Christchurch West. The old boys of the earlier generation were responsible for the plaque and also for;the.presentation of two memorial seats for the school grounds.. Mr F. B. Jeffreys (chairman of the Old Boys’ Association) said Mr Menses was the idol of the boys, not only because of his teaching ability, but his nrowess as an athlete. The tablet was unveiled by Mr W. Menzies, who was accompanied by his sister, Miss A. Menzies. Other speakers were Mr J. G. Poison (vice-chairman of the Canterbury University College Council), and Mr C. T. Aschmah. who paid .tribute to-the ability and character, of Mr Menzies. The present pupils, the Old Girls’ Association, and the parents’ Association were represented, and Mr F. D. Waller (a former headmaster), and Mr J, Wyn Irwin (representing former members of the staff) were also present.
