RACING AND TROTTING

WAIMATE R.C.

CUP WON BY NIGHT DRESS

REBEL MATE AND ARAVANE SUCCESSFUL The annual race meeting of the Walmate Racing Club was held on the Waimate racecourse on Saturday in most pleasant conditions. The weather was overcast but mild, and the track, although subjected to fairly heavy rain on the previous day, was comparatively firm, arid provided excellent going. The attendance was very satisfactory; but the totalisator turnover - showed a decrease of £1152 10s, as compared with last year’s meeting, the figures being £7BX6 10s, and £8968 respectively. This -decline was mostly accounted for by restricted investments on the two trotting events owing to one horse, Jacose, attracting the bulk of the speculation. The Waimate Cup provided an excellent. race, although there was no pace on over the first six furlongs. The success of Night Dress was popularly received notwithstanding that he was not in much public demand, and had disappointed many supporters at Oamaru. The track,' which was much firmer than at Oamaru, evidently suited him. and on this occasion he was kept away from the lead Until called upon in' the last furlong to overhaul the then leader, Swordstick, whom he beat decisively. At the conclusion of the race, a set of cutlery, given by the club, was handed by Mrs G. A. McCulloch, wife of the club’s president, to Mr A. S. Elworthy, part-owner of Night . Dress, with Mr D. W. ■ Gould, who was also present at the ceremony. Details are as follows; STUDHOLME HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of £105; second horse £lO, and third horse £5 from stake. One mile. I—J. M. NOTES ON THE RACING A Narrow .Victory Lord Puck was sent’out favourite for the Studholme High-weight Handicap and justified his position by a win id the last Stride. He was well placed over the first half-rnlle, but then commenced to drift, rind he conceded a substantial break to the leaders. Cymric/ and Rebel Chief, entering the straight. Cymric was in charge early In the run home and appeared to be in for a comfortable win until Lord Puck swooped down on him with a brilliant burst of speed to gain a head verdict. Rebel Chief hung on to hold Dawn, who. with Studley away badly after giving trouble at the start. .First Success Homing was sent out a t Trfal ter favourite than J ohnemby in the Trim Plate and scored her first success, but only after a close call at the instance of the little-fancied Norse, wl>o was making his second appearance In public. Gay Hussar, Admiralty. Norse.. Escort, and Confidant got away badly and tailed the field for the first two furlongs. Homing went to the front from this stage from Sheeny and Donroy, with Norse improving his position, and Homing led into the straight from Pink Bird, Norse, Sheeny, Donroy. and Taxpayer. Norse soon tackled Homing in the run home, and the .pair had a hard set-to, the favourite getting in the deciding stride to gain a head verdict. In “S struggle for third honours. Confidant came from well backtosnatch the Place from Taxpayer, with Valcron and Escort close up and Gay Hussar next. Night Dress’s Cup Swordstick, favourite for ■ the Waimate Cup, led out from the start and entered the straight just in behind Studley Royal, who went to the . front at the half-mile; Swordstick soon regained his lead m the run home and seemed to have the race in hand, but Night Dress, who .entered the home run wide out, finished with a telling run to beat him going away. Cherokee, always one of the leaders, was _ a close third, a head in front of Hanlon, Lazybones, and Vanity Queen, who finished almost in, line, with Balmenter, who was slow away, always in last place. One-Horse Finish Jacose, first choice for the Morven Trot, had a runaway, victory. He left his feet earlv. but after settling down ran up to the leaders/warfield ’.and Irish Dawn, and he rind Warfield sorted themselves out from: the remainder through the back stretch. Indications pointed to this pair having an interesting tussle home, but Warfield broke before reaching the straight and Jacose finished alone. Pleasant Guy, who broke twice during the race, finished resolutely : into second place from Xrisn, Dawn, with Irish Dusk half a length away. Favourite Beaten ' Midgard let an army of supporters down bv suffering a narrow defeat in the waitangi Hack Handicap. King Gustavo was the smartest away and soon opened up a break from Midgard, with another gap to Aravane and Rosaleen Dhu. King Gustavo was still clear, entering the straight, but was soon overhauled by Midgard, who, in turn, was challenged by Aravane. In another exciting tussle Aravane secured a head verdict. King Gustavo stayed on for third, three lengths in front of Lady Don. "A Class Sprinter Rebel Mate, who had an apprentice allowance of 71b, gave a meritorious performance in winning the President’s Handicap. When the field had settled down. Rebel Chief showed out from Rebel Mate, and this pair led into, the straight from Auctor and Petersham. Rebel Mate quickly gathered in the leader in the run home, and Auctor then challenged., Auctor made a game effort but had little chance of deposing Rebel Mate, who won with something in hand. Petersham was a neck away, a. length in front of Rebel Chief, with Combat, who was squeezed back at the start, always In last place. Second Success Jacose, penalised 48 yards for his early win, had another ..easy task in the Hook Trot. He soon made up his leeway, and with half a mile covered he was in front from Irish Dawn' and Irish Dusk. Jacose -had: a decisive lead entering the- straight from Diviner, Irish Dawn, Colleeri Travis, and Star Bond. Diviner could not make any impressoin on Jacose, who was never asked for a serious effort. Irish Dawn was a poor third in front of Star Bond. Mahoe collided with Irish Dusk shortly after the start and fell, his driver, G. Barr, being thrown over the inside fence, without injury. • Another Dual Winner - Fink Lad was made a littlri better favourite than Asia in the' Stewards’ Hack Handicap, and when he drew away early, In the run home his success seemed assured. but Aravane repeated his earlier ,final run, and • -wearing down. Pink Lad in the last few strides won going away. Prince Ruenalf was a fair third, two lengths in front of Vanity Queen, a stable mate of the winner, and who was in last place tover the first half ol the journey.

She raced to the fjont at the end of a, furlong, and was closely attended right through the running by Ashaway, Wild Career, and Mona’s Song, with Nightwings bringing up the rear. There was no pace on until the last halfmile and into the straight Peony Rose was still in charge {rcrm Wild Career, Ashaway, and Mona’s Song, and Nightwings still last. Peony Rose was always going well in the straight, and stayed on to beat Ashaway comfortably. Wild Career was beaten into third place, and Monas Song was next. Nightwings endeavoured to give the leaders a big start over the last half-mile, but had no chance of doing so. The honours of the race were with the winner. - \ The Open Sprint. Spendthrift finished with a great late run to win the Crown Handicap after being handy right through. Rodeur led early, and at the straight entrance she was 'closely attended by Bay Duke, Spendthrift, Pink Bond, and Waitoru. Spendthrift came through at the distance, and over the last furlong he came right away to beat Bay Duke. Ortyx, who was knocked back at the start and was last for most of the way, was finishing on In third place. Waitoru was almost in line in fourth place, and Rodeur next. Ortyx appeared a good proposition beaten,' as she was conceding the leaders seven or eight' lengths into the straight. The Steeplechase Pandine was sent out a firm favourite for the O’Brien Memorial Steeplechase, hut jumped badly all the way and was the last to finish. Gay Boa took charge with a mile to go and drew out well clear of Guste and. Red Terror -down the back. The latter pair headed him two furlongs from home. Guste was first over the last fence, and stayed on to win well. Gay Boa finished on to beat Red Terror for third. The Surgeon was a- moderate fourth. Scotsden fell at the first of the stand double. Guste had too much pace for others on the flat. Amelita Returns After being nicely placed in the running right through Amelita won the Macaulay Handicap in good style. Blissful Lady led from the early stages, and after Amelita had followed her into the straight the latter came away, to win nicely. Silkwood finished from the back to beat Blissful Lady for second. Sailing Lady was a moderate fourth after, having every chance. ■ TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting close to-day at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting are due at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Westland Meeting Special train arrangements from Canterbury for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held next Saturday, are advertised in this issue. For Forbury Park It is intended to- race Foremost Junior at the Forbury Park meeting next month, and he has been kept in steady work. Following on his, decisive winning effort over a . mile and five furlongs at Wyndham, 'some interest will be shown in his form at Forbury, as he looks certain to hold his own ; against the strong fields of improvers he will be opposing. graduate as far in the handicaps as expected, but; during the latter part of the year she was troubled with splints and this was the reason she failed in some of her races. The Llewellyn mare was placed over a mile and five furlongs at Winton in 3min 35sec, this being one of the best performances registered over this journey in Southland. • Walla Walla as a Sire Although Walla Walla has made something of a name for himself as a sire of winners in Australia, he was represented by his first New Zealand Winner when Don Walla scored in the Belmont Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday. A five-year-old gelding from Olga Pointer, Don Walla had raced fairly extensively in the North Island without gaining prominence, but the manner in which he beat his maiden opponents there was most attractive. It is possible that Don Walla will be greatly improved with age, and as he has plenty of speed, the future may find him racing well. Double Winner Jacose,. a double winner, at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a gelding by Jack Potts from Zonophone, and although he had failed in numerous starts before this meeting, the manner in which he won here suggested that he will have little difficulty in scoring in better company. In the Morven Trot Handicap he broke up at the start, and then won without effort, while a penalty of 48 yard% in the Hook Trot Handicap, again saw him score easily. Usually well mannered, and possessing speed, Jacose can be.expected to score again in the .near future. He is a half brother to Quest. Speedy Pacer Pleasant Guy gave a great show of speed in his two races at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he only needs to settle down reasonably well from the barrier to be returned an early winner. In the Morven Trot Handicap, he lost ground at the start, and he again broke with half the journey covered, at which stage he was giving the leaders fully ,100 yards. In spite of this he got to within 30 yards of the winner to be second. Pleasant Guy failed to complete the course in his second outing, after another poor beginning. He has done little racing, however, and experience should find him settling down.
