gathering at prebbleton
On Thursday evening the Prebbleton Hall was crowded with visitors, many Of whom had travelled long distances to attend the eighth birthday celebrations of the local Women’s Institute. Several other institutes and branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were represented. The president (Mrs H. Prebble) welcomed the visitors and presented trophies won during the year to the following members: —Mrs E. Higgs (silver cup for highest aggregate points), Mrs A. Page (bloom competition), Mrs J. Easterbrook (decorative work), Mrs M. Dickie (cookery), and Mrs F. Page (needlework). Gifts for their babies were presented to Mrs H. Claughton and Mr. R. Carpenter, and to Mrs Colenso for the first “institute” twins. Floral sprays were presented to the secretary (Mrs H. Widdowson) and to the treasurer (Mrs W. Kolkman), and the president received, a bouquet. At supper time the birthday cake was cut by Mrs W. Hands, the oldest member. The candle ceremony was performed by Mrs M. Dickie, who had made and decorated the cake, and Mrs Widdowson. An enjoyable concert programme included the following items:—Waxworks show, presented by a group of children: piano solo, Miss Bessie Hands; songs, Mrs Pearce; tap dances, Mr K. Wright; songs with ukulele accompaniment, Mrs Ripley: songs, Mr 1.. Burton; songs with banjo accompaniments, Mr Roberts. Two short plays were presented by the following members: —Mesdames J. Anderson, R. Carpenter, F. Carter, T. Coleman, H. Prebble, G. Rutherford, J. Varley, H. Widdowson, and Miss S. Horsfield. The accompanists were Mrs Phillips, Miss Doris Webb, and Miss Joyce Kolkman. The programme concluded with a dance, music being provided by Messrs G. Rutherford, H. Claughton, B. Crossan, and W. Millar. Mr H. Prebble was master of ceremonies. GARDEN CLUB
ADDRESS BY MR W. J. HUMM
The North Christchurch Garden Club held its April meeting at the home of Mrs N. Gale (Gossett street). The speaker was Mr W. J. Humm, and his subject was “Shrubs, Autumntinted and Berrying.” He illustrated his address by showing specimens of beautifully coloured leaves and berries. , , , - In the competition for a bowl of autumn-tinted foliage he awarded first place to Mrs W. Balch, second place to Mrs Francis, and third to Mrs C. S. Thompson. In the “vase” class Mrs C. S. Thompson was placed first, Mrs B. Banks second, and Mrs Coleman third. Each member received a packet of choice ranunculi, purchased from club funds, and of freesias, the gift of Mrs L. E. Smith.
AUSTRALIAN CLUB
Two one-act plays, presented by the Australian Playlovers, and vocal and instrumental items formed the evening’s programme at a meeting of the Australian Club held at Hay’s lounge this week. Messrs Swann and I. Street sang songs, and banjo and accordionpiano solos with songs were given by Mr A. Anderson. Those taking part in the one-act plays were Mesdames Powell and F. Cooper, Misses A. Yockins and N. Jefferies, Messrs F. Cooper, A. Coutts, J. Cooper, and R. Tonkin. Among those present were Mesdames J. Hadley, J. Taylor, C. Till, G. H. Parsons, A. Coutts, R. Bullard, M.
