Kg-i&ta FRENCH PIONEERS HONOURED Memorial Unveiled At Akaroa FRIENDSHIP OF TWO ■ RACES The memory of the French colonists who arrived at Akaroa • on August 16, 1840, was honoured with the unveiling of a . memorial on the Akaroa foreshore during the national centen- : nial celebrations on Saturday afternoon. The memorial, standing at the point where it is considered that the French settlers landed 100 years ago, is a simply inscribed block of granite. The unveiling, performed by the Governor-General (Lord ' Galway), was accompanied by the presentation of a pageant representing the arrival of the French .settlers. The Consul for France (M, Andre Pouquet) gave a commemorative address. A notable gathering of distinguished visitors included the Prime Minister (the' Hon. P. Fraser), members of the Cabinet and both Houses of the Legislature, and descendants of the, original settlers. The Mayor of Akaroa (Mr F. R. E., Davis) presided.
