RECRUITING
TO TK* EDITOR OF THE PRESS Sir,—lt is of interest to note that Nora Wahln in her close study of Germany, “Reaching for the Stars, makes reference to the reintroduction of conscription into Germ yby broadcast on March 16. 1935. It wa- expected that England and France would make a sharp reply, but nothing followed and there was no opposition on the part of the nation. It transpired that a short time previously the. secret police had arrested pacifists from each department of the Reich, so that the general body was left without leaders! We do not adopt Nazi methods, but it should be kept in mind that in war tune democratic governments may be forced to dictatorial acts. Whether it would help or hinder the Government I do not know, but it seems advisable that the recruiting conference in Christchurch on Monday should carefully consider the value of a plebiscite, say of men only, on the question of calling up any class. — Yours, etc..
